Circumstances beyond our control meant we went this weekend to Hillend. The wattle is really in full flower out there and all went well. The Troopy packed to maximum capacity with camping gear for five.

We soft camped in the village camping ground, it suited us this time, but we will head up there another time and do the bridle track.

The new stretchers and thermarest mattresses worked well. Also our new fridge, the primus stove....well....the picture tells the story. I guess you get what you pay for and the force that this exploded and distance it flew was unbelievable, we were just thankful that it didnt hurt anyone. Its supposed to have a safety cutout.

Anyone uncertain about going next weekend with Baz and the gang I hope these pictures might inspire you, just sorry we couldnt make it then.

Baz, after the explosion a fellow camper came up and said his father in law had had similar happen. On theirs was in very very small print a sticker saying to make sure the main bit was the right way up. If it was on ours I didnt see it, and certainly anyone who needed reading glasses couldnt read it.

I was boiling a billy and effectively cut off the heat and forced it back into the unit. In retrospect I can understand what I did, but there would be many other inexperienced campers like me who might do the same.

I feel that one it shouldnt fit the wrong way, and two what happened to the safety cut out if it overheated which it obviously did.

This stove comes assembled in the black box and the centre black part (far left in photo) on ours was unbeknown to me the wrong way up. As I have only ever cooked on electricity and open fires it seemed ok to me, held the billy stable etc. I can tell you my daughter and I are very traumatised by the whole thing, thinking of the damage it could have caused to the kids if we hadnt placed it where we did. On the one I have, you can't lock the gas cartridge in unless you have that center piece the correct way up. Ours has a lever on the lock mechanism that prevents this from happening.

Thanks Baz I got myself sorted out on that one, it makes sense to use the more open grill plate to let more heat to the top area and that was part of my problem, the bottom cooking too fast would be helped by using a trivet, but the denser pan is touted for pizza and stir fry etc. I sort of feel a bit resentful to have to pay the extra for the cook book which might give more detail and is sold by Cobb. The total of the Cobb and extra pan and cover are not cheap by any means and I feel they should throw in the book instead of the booklet. I feel the Cobb has a lot to offer and extends simple camp cooking and a few pointers from fellow users makes it quicker to get good results. While at hill end I bought a cast iron pot (the right size for two) and can see myself using that on the Cobb for various things. If it heats up enough it will have more depth for stir fries than the pan.
