What do you want to use it for?

Do you want a winch? Steel is stronger so in the event of hitting a kangaroo, your more likely to continue on with just minor damage.

If no to above, alloy is lightweight, the genuine bars suit airbags and are now designed to absorb damage before damaging the vehicle. Alloy bars are more expensive.

Cheers

Chris.

Steel Bars can be fixed , relatively easy. Weld , bent etc.

Alloy bars cant be (well they can to some extent , but not easily).

Steel bars weigh more then alloy.

Alloy bars are a bit harder to keep looking good then steel bars. Normally a lot of polishing required.

Winch . . . steel . . . not alloy

Mate flappan's answer is good. If it is to be air bag compatible then the strength issue in relation to hitting something is a non issue because each has to deform to set standards and so they should both deform equally. Good quality bars are all expensive. Quality - buy a reputable brand and you should be OK.

I understand that steel has more elasticity than alloy. If this is correct, it explains why they can cope with the " little incidents " that occur in the bush much better.

I bought steel bullbar & roof rack for strength & elasticity. And I'm a happy camper with that decision afetr 6 years

Hi Ryan01,
Steel is stronger and more durable than alloy and as both bars are around $1000 ea you would want it to last a while.A mate hit a roo at 110kph with no damage with a arb steel bar wheras an alloy would be a throw away job.Bear in mind the extra 65 kilo's on the front end from a steel bar would also require some suspension upgrading.
cheers mark
