G'day Mob,

I'm sure there'll be some people out there with a wry smile on their face as they read this, but as I'm a beginner in the 4wd world I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I picked up the hilux after having a safari snorkel fitted today... well strike me down and call me roger it is one loud bugger! Is there any way I can reduce some of the noise? Is there some sort of special filter you can fit with a muffler effect?

Red faced and balding,

Toffa

Hey Toffa, you could run a secondary air filter (between main and snorkel) or by trial and error, fit a tube at right angles of varying lengths to reduce induction noise. (blind tube,ie dead end). You will see that this is very common for late model vehicles as the manufacturer tries all they can to make their engine run quieter..............................hope this helps...col

My snorkel made no difference in noise for me so I am surprised yours is noisy. I did read somewhere about someone fiiting a *whispers quietly so no on hears* hiclone which stopped the induction noise from a snorkel.

If its not a turbo, has it got the washer fitted.Ive tried this on our 4 Runner and it quitens it down a fair bit with the washer in.(supplied in the kit)We leave it out as I quite like the induction note.Didnt notice any difference in fuel economy with it in or out.If yours is a turbo then they are NOT to be fitted.

Gidday Nick.
To be honest I dont know as I paid someone else to fit it. I assume he fitted everything though. It seems to have a fairy harsh vibration in it at certain revs which is the main noise issue. Dont know if thats just an induction thing or if it suggests something needs nipping up. Thanks for the info.

One other thing to check is the two bolt heads on the door pillar where the snorkel mounts on.When I first fitted ours the bolt head touched the pillar and there was a real bad vibration at a certain revs.Took about 1mm off the bolt head and not a noise since.

Toffa, harsh vibration just off idle can often be attributed to engine-gearbox contact with the body. Mebe check see if there is contact anywhere, or something may have been moved or bent when the snorkel was fitted!.....cetcha..col

Gday mate,

You could do as above, but be glad you can hear your beast breathing that clean fresh cool air.

Mine sucks like...well, you know, since I had the mods and can hear the turbo spooling up and down, and hear when the boot is in, really sounds like the snorkel may even be restricting it. Keep the snorkel as free as possible and your engine will thanks you!

Cheers

Chris.

Vibration can be heard if the holes for the studs arent drilled the size specified, a nd they contact the body, transmitting noise and vibration to the snorkel which works like a bass tube and amplifies them out near your window.

Engine induction noise is something you soon grow used too, and can be easily controlled by switching on the air con, fresh air etc, and winding the window up ;-)

I have a 99 model 3 litre diesel hilux and experienced the same problem. Did a few searches on this and other forums, spoke to ARB and Safari and was told by all that it is common. Did not get told this by the ARB salesman when I booked the car in but after returning it they said that it always happens. Thanks guys.

The forums offered a few ideas but nothing worked. I put up with it for about 6 months and eventually the reverberation rattled a lot of the left guard bolts loose and also cracked all of the left light assembly mounts and the headlight became loose. Indicator lensed broke too.

I consulted an engineer about the problem who was familiar with it and told me that it is to do with the length of the piping in the snorkle that causes severe induction reverberation. Some snorkle lenghts will cause this to be really bad on some cars. All current series non turbo hiluxes suffer badly, some late model patrols get it a bit and many earlier model 4WD vehicles get it bad too. The only solution to completely get rid of it is to change the length of the piping on the air induction side. I experimented with lenghts of pipe between the intake and snorkle and if you get the right length the noise will stop. the only problem is on a Hilux the correct length is about 2 feet and it looks pretty bad. the other solution that I was advised to do was to fit a Turbo which will add an extra few feet of pipe into the system. I initially did not like this solution as it was expensive but after a while of trying everything suggested and fitting a new set of headlights and indicators I bit the bullit and did the turbo thing. Eventually the interior noise got so bad that I could not hear the radio very well. This is in the extremely well soundproofed dual cab SR5.

I am way past "really pi$$ed off" I now look at it with a bit of a sense of humour after blowing $3000.00 on a product that initially cost me $450.00. But the reverberation has gone and I now have 30% more power and get 1200 kms to a tank. I never have to down shift on the big hills either and can tow my boat better.

Hope that this helps as it was the only solution that worked for my car. Do a search in the archives under "Hilux snorkle noise" and you will get a few ideas but none worked for me. The noise eventually drove me round the bend and I wished that I had never had the damn thing fitted.

Gees Floyd, thats a really upsetting story. I think you have a point about mechanics that encourage you to put a snorkel on, dont tell you anything about the noise, and then tell you its normal. Well if normal means $3000 then I'm not to sure what abnormal would mean?! Glad you can look back at it with a sense of humour.
Thanks for the info.

Mysteriously, after going for a run half way to Coona and back, there is now absolutely no vibration. Guess it all had to settle down or something... will check it out in the morning but.
Thanks all for your help and suggestions. Just proves what a kickarse online community this is. Keep on trekking!!
