as per topic, did the Hunt oil rd a couple of weeks ago in my travels... ha! all the stuff you read about being very overgrown, hard to follow and only gets a few groups on it a year is a load of c**p. If it only gets a few groups on it a year then there must be about a hundred vehicles in each group. It was no harder to do than the Eagle hwy, the Gary hwy or the David Carnegie rd, and guess what, it even had some corrugations on it, and i dont mean at the southern end either, in the middle. Although only small ones, they were still there. Good track nontheless.

I agree with you Richard.

I think the false reports etc are generated from tour operators and the like, who say you cant do this and you cant do that so as to generate more income for themselves by creating a type of fear of the outback roads.

I've been up that way myself, even doing the top quarter of the Hunt Oil Road by myself at night - It's just your standard outback track - no problems..

You're the first person to bring this subject up - Congratulations on having the guts to say something.

Cheers

Yes good to see a true pioner who has a go into the unknown. All our explorers went ahead into the unknown & took risks.
First to type in but proberly not the first to say over a beer or bbq.

Its beginning to make me really wonder about the Canning. Is it just the remoteness or is it really a tough run?

Dont tell too many people, otherwise it'll be a proper highway next time you want to drive it!

Richard - you are so right. I rarely believe what others tell me about road conditions (apart from the cops etc who you have to obey or get locked up) unless I know that person's driving capabilities There are heaps of people out there who have no idea what 4WDing is really about. Many a time I've had people tell me that I shouldn't be going to such and such or that the road ahead is really bad etc and when I got there I wondered what the hell they were on about.
With respect to the Canning - get together with some friends and go do it - you will not regret it. It rates as the best trip I've done - leaves the Simpson for dead. Yes you will need to be well prepared because you are a long way from anywhere but with reliable vehicles, spares, proper comms etc etc it's fine. The driving is relatively easy (we went north to south) and the scenery is ever changing. I highly recommend it.
