Man charged with 4WD footpath rampage
October 4, 2004 - 11:37AM

A Perth man alleged to have mounted a footpath in a four-wheel drive to deliberately knock down six pedestrians has been charged.

The 22 year-old from suburban Scarborough was charged with causing grievous bodily harm after the incident in Doubleview early on Saturday morning, police said.

Police will allege the man was driving a white Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel drive, when it mounted the footpath and struck six of 12 people walking along at the time.

A 17-year-old youth remains critically ill in QEII Medical Centre following the incident.

The five others struck suffered injuries of varying degrees, police said.

The 22 year-old is due to appear in the East Perth magistrates court today.

Obviously to the press 4wd's aren't vehicles but a totally separate species. In another tragic incident last week, a Perth toddler was badly injured when run over by a 4wd driven by the child's father. In both cases, any vehicle could have done as much damage.

If 24% or vehicles are 4wds, they will be mentioned quite a bit - but would they have said "run over by a Holden/Falcon" or any other brand of 2wd vehicle? Perhaps it is the newspaper editors who need educating.

Isn't it human nature to marginalise like that. I mean, how many times have we heard on this site about all those backpacker troopies on fraser.

The last time I was there I had no probs with them at all. In fact the opposite. They were frustratingly careful. There's a lot of them there so there's bound to be incudents.

So if we are so judgemental why should we expect any different in return?

Does anyone remember the bad tempered hooker in Kalgoolie that got sacked and and rammed the brothel about 17 times in her suzuki sierra? :)
She managed to demolish the whole font of the building.
