Has anyone had the GU turbo upgrade?
MTQ in Toowoomba does the UG for around $2800.
They claim an increase in power from 86kW to 122 kW and Torque from 265Nm to 362 Nm by using a custom built Mitsubishi turbo and a 3" exhaust
I am looking for extra power to tow a large van.
Any feedback :?:

Rosco,

You've seen what I have done to mine and what you can do. It comes down to the fact that you have a standard turbo capable of doing exactly that for $1,000.00 less. But, if your turbo has already done 150+ k's, I guess the decision is up to you.

Is 122kw at the rears?

MTQ in Brisbane did my original fitout on the GQ and I was left disappointed. May have been a one off, but then again...

Have you talked to anyone else yet?

Cheers

Chris.

Chris
Can you elaborate on what mods have you done to the turbo, who and how much?
Thanks
Rosco

Rosco,

Gday mate.

On the GU, the E.G.R was bloked off, 3 inch exhaust mandrel bent to the dump pipe. Original dump pipe. Turbo running 12psi, pre and post dyno and fuel tuned to dyno specs. Also connected pyro and boost gauge but did not include purchase of gauges.

There is a post with the results a couple of weeks ago. From memory, I had around 950ftLb torque, and 154hp at the rear wheels. Reach peak torque at 1800rpm and holds steady for around 2800rpm. At 1350rpms it already was at around 800ftLbs. HP really climbed at 1600rpms.

Towed the recently purchased 2nd handy Aussie Swag which tares in at around 650kg's unloaded. Running 285 MTR's, 3 inch lift and have most of the accessories I need fitted. The water tank in the swag had 60L of water in it, and I had 3 passengers, ran 100 kph the whole way home in 5th without even pushing it, including the long sloping climbs on the highway. Max EGT's hit about 500 which is reasonable. If I knocked it back to 4th on one of the hills EGT's would not have hit 500.

Fuel economy has increased from 7.75k/l to 8.47. And that's probably with a slightly heavier foot, can't help it.

So all in all it cost $1,900 which included GST. This is the second time I've had it done to a Patrol and I'm happy. Hope that helps you out.

Cheers

Chris.

G'day Rosco,
Give Peter at *Toowoomba Superior Turbos* a call on (07) 4634 6565 ...
(literally right around the corner from MTQ)..
online at ..* www.superiorturbos.com.au *...
He will explain what what they do better than I can, but basically, they replace the exhaust turbine housing (& wheel) with the larger Garrett (I think?) unit as used on the (AXT) aftermarket turbos.. original compressor is used.. new bearings t/out (from memory)... 3" dump from turbo thru 3" mandrel-bent exhaust w/- flex pipe & free-flow muffler... tuning done on dyno... This is their "stage 3 power-up" & cost $2300 when I got mine done about a year ago... Starts to boost from around 1100 rpm, & reaches max. boost (approx. 10.5 psi) at approx. 2200 rpm...

I've forgotten the exact #'s from the dyno readout (from memory, it was at least what MTQ are claiming), but I can tell you that the difference in "driveability" is very noticeable, especially when towing.. even with the (slightly larger than original) 265/75/16 tyres that I'm running...

Whoever you decide to go with, I would most certainly recommend that you at least have a talk to Peter before making a decision... He also fitted the aftermarket turbo to my previous vehicle (GQ TD42), and I've been very happy with the workmanship & service...

Regards, Ed. C.
