Hi all,
Well finally I have managed to fix the Response Time sort issue that we have always had in the system. The Response Time sort output now will order the posts based on the latest time submitted, latest reply or latest followup. So it will correctly show you the posts in order of the latest update regardless of which type of update (new thread, reply or followup).
Also as before the Response Time sort will be written to a cookie on your computer so each visit to the system will set the sort output to your last prefered setting.
I have slightly changed the names of the Sort Options to Post ID and Response Time to show the difference to the system. If you have any problems with this option please let me know.

Fantastic David. I've always been a bit frustrated using the ExplorOz
forum because interesting threads so quickly get 'burried' under the flow of new posts. All the other Forums (Forii??) I frequent seem to default to the mode where the most recent post or repsonse floats back to the top. This is a big improvement in my books.
While I'm here, how hard would it be to add 'preview' and/or 'edit' functions? It's also frustrating to post your message and then spot typos that you can't get back to, to fix. Just a thought.

Ian,
Are you using the Members (Customers)
My Home -
Forum Updates since last
logon search. This option will only show you thread updates since your last
logon. That way the list of threads will ONLY contain things that have been updated. This option works in either sort option also, this is how I use the system as it makes it easy to see what has changed since my last visit.
Post editing has always been in my mind however I have never done it. The main reason is that the email notifications would have already been sent with the initial content of the update. If you then changed it what should happen? Also it would have the potential to leave us (ExplorOz) in an un-comfortable position as someone could post a defamotary or rude post to someone have the emails sent out and then edit/retract it before the rest of the world can read it. I have thought of then making it not send the alert until after a confirmation/preview however when I thought about that what is the point, you can simply re-read what you have typed in the first place before initial submission.
I am however investigating a spell checker option at the moment.

Hi David,
I hadn't tried that search option before - looks good. I see your dilema with an edit function but a 'preview' is definitely useful, especially to check that any hyperlinks have been entered correctly.
"you can simply re-read what you have typed in the first place before initial submission." - yes, that is fine in theory, but it seems no matter how many times I read my own writing, I very often find some silly typo later, after it's 'in print'...

Hi Ian,
Don't mean to be a smart ar$e but I believe plural of "forum" is "fora". Also I am very interested in your digital EGT gauge and will be in touch when I want to fit one which probably won't be for a few months.
Cheers, Mark

Hi Ian,
There are program around that allow you to run a spell check in web pages.I run one from fromwww.iespell.com that includes a custom dictionary. It's also free for private use.
Prior to getting ieSpell I used to type up in Word, run spell check and then cut and paste.
See Ya

David have you got around to looking at the problem of when you have more than one page and you hit 2 or next page 1 comes up again. When you do it a second time it is OK and the third page will come up on the first try.
It's a bit of a nuisance with slow speed dialup connections.

For the life of me I cannot find it nor has anyone else reported anything like this. I am at a loss as to the cause of it. I am still waiting on a screen capture from you if you can provide this it may help me see a patern from the output.

Hi David,
I am not sure but I think this happens only in certain circumstances. i.e. if no posts have been updated or added from when you first access page 1 then you will move on to page 2 etc but if some have then when you hit next page 1 comes up again. Could this be true? I have experiecned this before (many times) and thought that this was the cause. Just my 2 cents

Do you mean a few items from the end of page one. The system is fully dynamic and so if you spend a fair bit of time on page one then move to page two you may see a few threads from the end of page one at the top of page two as they may have shuffled down due to new threads being posted on page one.
Is this the issue or am I missing it.

No, this is not the issue.
When selecting page 2 or next sometimes you get page 1 displayed again,

OK when this happens can you copy and paste the address line in a email to me at david@exploroz.com please. I need to know if the line has a &PN=2 in the string. This is only required when you have selected page 2 etc and page 1 is shown again. If the &PN=2 is not in the string this will indicate an issue with what your browser is requesting. Also can you tell me which one of the 2 areas you click. Is it Next at the top, 2 at the bottom, Next at the bottom etc.

Hi David,
The same thing happens to me running Safari on Mac OSX. Each time I go to either "Next" or "2" after reading posts on page 1 it simply refreshes the current page. Then after I scroll to the bottom of page 1 again the direction works correctly second time around.

Thanks to Wombat's email to me I have been able to identify the problem. I have now installed a fix and the problem should have gone away. Please let me know if it still occurs.
BTW: This issue would have only shown up using the Members updates since last
logon search.

Hi David,
I emailed Michelle about this the other day but I would like the group to either support or can the suggestion.
As a member I have only two issues with the forums.
I am a member of fishnet.com.au and they categorise the forums into various topics. Therefore interesting and valuable threads on particular topics don't get buried quite so quickly. Some topics could include
Mapping, navigation & GPS
Trip information
Accessorising & modifying vehicles
Communications and electronics
Mechanical & repairs
and others I'm sure you could think of.
The other involves timeout.
I often browse the
forum at work. On several occasions now I have typed lengthy responses to
forum messages only to lose them after clicking on the submit button and having it jump out to the
logon screen. If I
logon again the message should continue to be submitted I would have thought, but if I log on it isn't on the
forum thread I was posting to, and if I go back it is gone. It is EXTREMELY frustrating.
If I think about it I now cut and paste any typing into notepad as I have no way of knowing prior to submitting it if I am going to lose it or not.
I work in and emergency
services call centre and sometimes have time to browse and opine, but if I get interupted I might not get back to it for some time.
It's hardly world peace at stake - why have the timeouts anyway? Is security on this such an issue?
When you type a lengthy response and lose it, it is really, really frustrating.
Dave

Easy answer on the timeout issue - Set auto
logon ON - this process is called before any update and you would be auto logged on as the message is being posted. I know this works. Sessions timeouts are a thing of Internet servers it is not a security function it is a server and user resource management issue. In general most servers are set at 20 mins inactivity and the sessions is deemed to be closed. I did make an adjustment to logged on members to 30 mins however you would need to visit the
My Home page to activate this.
As for multi topics - There are a number of people for and a number of people against. Having mutli sections means you have to open up multi sections to view the goings on. It is not much different to having to go though a few pages. Single section also makes it easy for poeple to know thay are posting to the correct place as there is only one. Also the Members Updates since last
logon should easily account for the requirement to see only updates since your last
logon. Are you using this feature? If not
My Home -
Forum Updates area take the link at the bottom. If you use this the first place you should go on
logon is the
My Home and navigate to the
forum from this point. Couple this with the updated Response Time sort options and you should be easily able to keep up with the most recent changes whether you visit every couple of hours or every few weeks.
I am open to feedback on this still and thanks for your feedback. If I can help make it work better I will, mostof the system here is built on user feedback.

Hi David & Dave,
Since you're open to feedback, I personally hate topic-categorised forums. I tend to browse for posts of interest based on the topic line and quite often I'll come across something quite relevant or interesting to me that I wasn't necessarily looking for or thought I interested in. For instance, recently there was a post on aftermarket additional glove boxes being available for GU's. Now I'd never heard of them but was very pleased and interested to find out about them. However, if this post had been categorised under say "Accessories & Modifications" I probably would have missed it because we don't wish to modifiy our GU and aren't looking for more accessories (or so I thought!). Therefore, I wouldn't have been looking in this category. My point is, that with categorised forums, I always feel that I could be missing out on a pertinent post unless I go in to each category and check just in case...so whats the point of having catergories in the first place!?
Also a question for EO David, even if I save my
logon details so I don't have to manually
logon each time I enter EO, the set auto
logon ON check box always shows up unchecked despite me checking it ON.

Melissa,
Thanks for your info on the
forum categories. I personally hate them also and hence this is reason ExplorOz is the way it is. As I indicated there are + and - for each, ours is the way it is and I have no intention on changing it.
Onto your next issue - DO you have Norton Security Centre installed. If yes the best thing to do is visit ExplorOz - logoff go to the
logon page and enter rubbish in the password field and click
Logon. This will take you back to the
logon page with all details removed. Then enter the details again, check auto
logon, disable Norton Security - hit
logon and then re-enable Norton security. Let me know if this fixes it or if this is in fact the problem. If you do not have norton try the same process without disabling Norton (as you do not have it).
