Following on from a number of posts on this site and others I've checked out the differences between the two filters offered by Nissan for the 4.2 diesel patrols. The guys I know there said that the cheaper filter (about $10) is for the Y60 which is naturally aspirated the dearer filter is for the Y61 the turbo version. Also the difference in weight is noticable so greater capacity. They said they certainly wouldn't suggest swapping them but if I did so around town it wouldn't be so bad. More carbon but much lower klms. For long distance driving they believed over the long term it wouldn't be good for the motor, they would start to bypass pretty quickly. How much fact there is I don't know but they said they had been down this path many times.

But they didn't know what micron size the fuel filter, if you know please tell me.

Fair enough Austravel!

Must be ok for the GQ's but not the GU's. Thanks for digging a little deeper.

Be interesting to see if they at service time fit the bigger more expensive ones! I'll have to have a look. Do you do your own serving Austravel?

Not sure it really matters about GQ or GU it's whether they are turboed or not. Turboing must put a greater contaminate load on the oil.... don't know but I think I'll play it safe.

I do my own servicing but did get them to do a 40k service as I brought it at 60k and wasn't sure the previous owner did it properly. Near fell over with the price though.

G'day Chris,

First time I've owned a diesel. When you turn your's off are they quite rough? Mines feels like it wants to throw itself out of the engine bay, nothing like turning off a petrol. It feels like it's trying to run on to some degree. Mainly when it's cold but also at times when hot.

Gday Austravel,

My GQ after turboing and boosting was quite rough to shut down especially close to service time.

At the moment the GU is good and has only done 6000k's, but I have noticed since the powerup a slight shudder, but only if it's left to idle for more than 5 minutes. I posed a question some time back about the type of oil to use for powered up vehicles but was left confused. Just read the post of sevo who works for Nissan, hopefully he can shed some light!

Chris.

As far as I know, nissan changed filters 1/2 way thru GU range, and went back to the older ones.

Now Im not sure if this includes the TD42T or not. Interesting point, all aftermarket turbo GQs, nobody recommended, or suggests swapping filters for others.

maybe ask on the newer Patrol forum http://forum.patrol4wd.org/phpBB2/ or search the massive archives we are working on :D

That's what they said to me to. The cheaper one was used for the NA diesel then when turboed they used two different filters then went back to two of the same filter but of a better quality. I can only go on what they said be nice to have a good contact in nissan to confirm it. Your right about aftermarket turboing.

Which one is the dearer one????

I guess unless you keep the car for the medium to long term you'd never notice the difference using the cheaper filter.

Thanks sevo, good to get a view from someone on the "inside".

You might be able to answer the question I posed to Chris, about diesels being rough on shut down.

Also one other if you don't mind. Mine is a cab chassis, what is the pipe that runs back to the fuel cap and is vented inside a plastic cover?? It's on both main and aux, I'm assuming it's just an vent for expansion in the tank. If so can it also draw in air?? Should it have a filter on to stop dust etc??

Hope you can help

I am also interested in the powerup results, my 4.2 is 4000km old and keen to powerup. Has there been study done on air intake restriction when the rest of the motor has increased breathability? I had a LC TD4.2 80 upspecked and it was hungry for air with a 4inch snorkel until it reached 100kmph. Safari and Airtek seem to be 3in or less.

Gday Miles,

Since my powerup, I have noticed the loud sucking noise coming from the snorkel, whilst under load my lovely wife almost got her hand stuck to the snorkel when I asked her how hard it was pulling air through.

I'm wondering whether a larger snorkel should be on the cards. If it's sucking through a straw that's not big enough to allow the air it needs, one day it will let me know. Trouble is, where would you go to get a bigger snorkel apart from making your own?

Chris.
