Tyre choice on troop carrier

I’m the happy owner of a Troopy Carrier with 16x5.5” rims. My Dunlop Super Grippers 750R16 are doing an excellent job on tracks inland but I think they “dig” a bit too deep on beaches though.
I need new tyres in the near future and I’m considering buying a wider tyre which may be more suitable for beach driving.
Has anybody had the same bad experience with Supper Grippers in soft sand and can anybody give a bit of advise to a tyre newbie like me.
I like to stick to my 16x5.5" split rims.

Get yourself a set of 235/16 roadgrippers from the base model 100 series, they are less aggressive than the normal roadgrippers, handle better on the road, much better in sand and are not as good in muddy conditions but I wore two sets out on my troopy without any failures or punctures. A good all round touring tyre.
They are about equal to a 6 ply and cannot be run as highly inflated as a 7.50 16 as they are a softer tyre.

The super grippers are fine in sand as long as you let them down. 18 PSI to start then 14 if very soft. If you are still having trouble I'd suggest it's your power V's weight. Not sure what motor you have but a 2H or 1HZ diesel trying to pull the bulk of a loaded troopy though soft sand often doesn't work. (
Mine was called the boat anchor) Changing to wider tyres or a different pattern often makes less difference than letting 2 PSI out of them. Cheers Craig.....................

I refer to my troopy 1HZ on soft sand as the (big burrowing animal) as i watch other 4x4 fly past , but i suppose you cannot have every thing .

Hi Jones'y, We do about 30,000Klm a year of road and run split rims on our Troopy ( the only way to go ) and have been useing Bridgestone Dueller 661 A/S10 ply's for about 7 years and swear by them. They are the widest tread you can get on a split rim and stand right up, they are very good on dirt or black top and we have never had a tread puncture in them in 7 years. But the best part about them is you will get 80,000 Klm plus out of the tread. They retail for about $230.00. They where devoloped for the mining industry in Canada and most mines in Aus. use them all the time. They only come in the one size. Have fun mate. Alick

Thanks guys – I appreciate the advise. I will probably end up buying the Grippers again or the 235/16 tyre as a couple of you suggested.

Those D661 Bridgestones are available in 235/85/16.I also have them on my Cruiser. Excellent tyre.

Hello to Jonesy from anouther Jonesy, on my troopie i had a heap of trouble keeping her above the sand it was called the pippie as she always wanted to dig down into the sand. I know you wanted to use the same rims but i put a set of 33x12.5 coopers on white sun-raisers and it made all the differance. people talk about the foot print of a tyre being the all important factor but i think things may vary from one truck to the next, as some said the power to wieght must be a consideration
