Hey moza
everyone has their own ideas. mine is get a diesel with a turbo. Service it regularly. Will last you a life time.

I have a "gutless" diesel and it goes everywhere I want it to go with no dramas, and at comfortable speeds. I do get a bit of extra practice at gear changes up hills, but it can climb the side of a wall, so I am happy. It is also affordable for me. Could fit a turbo I suppose, but don't need to go any faster, or tow anything too heavy. At 250,000km it blows no smoke and should last a lifetime, as I service it every 5000km. Love my 80 Series : )

Not much point in complaining about fuel prices, as nobody is going to do anything about them. If diesel fuel pricing in recent times was an Olympic event, the fuel companies would have a string of gold medals.

I have 100 series manual diesel and it's great. I live in the Pilbara and we use it off road all the time, including trips to Perth. I am thinking of fitting a turbo only for the reason of a little more power when overtaking road trains etc. Just did a trip from Tom Price to Perth to Shark Bay then inland to Mount Augustas then home. Paid $1.30 at Gascoyne Jct and $1.50 for fuel at Cobra Stn. Nothing we can do about it. Hope this helps.

Hi there,

I purchased an 80 series 1996 1HDFT 100,000 km last year. Wonderful vehicle, dealer serviced, genuine km, geat fuel economy at least 5 times better than petrol ;-)), serviced every 5000km as per the books, dead straight, dead original - private sale.

Largest cost outside this is getting it how I want it. Accessories are a bit dear :-(((

Whatever you get, petrol, diesel or LPG service it regularly and look up the Yahoo group appllicable.

Hi Seanny:
Keep an eye out on eBay for accessories. I have tricked up my 80 Series for next to nothing compared to prices of new items.

These include:
Steel bullbar (genuine Toyota, made by ARB): $300
Rear Wheel Carrier (Opposite Lock Caddy type) - $400
Overhead Console: $120
Steel Rear 2 Drawer system (new) - $300 (Red Desert)
Narva Driving Lights (new) - $160

Got some Poly-Airs from Firestone in the USA for aboutr 1/2 of what they cost here (I think $160 incl postage).

Plus Tyrepliers, High Lift Jack, Hand winch, spare rims, and a stack of camping gear. Love eBAy.

Jack

As long as you are going to be able to purchase lpg on your trips i would suggest go with it. Lpg will save you heaps and heaps of $$$$ over a diesel. Diesel is about 3 times the price of gas at the moment.......i know you will use more gas/100km's than diesel but not even close in economy camparison, and you won't have to forfeit the power. As for the quote about diesel being 5 times cheaper than petrol to run?????????????????? Give me the drugs you are on mate lol

Hi Moza
I've got a 80 series petrol and my in-laws have a diesel. We did Cape York together last year. We both towed trailers and both carried about the same weight. I figure the extra $$ I used used in petrol was off-set by the diesels higher purchase price, 5000km service shedudes and higher rebuild costs. The extra power, especially tow up ranges etc is a bonus.
On the other side...
The diesels done over 450000km and last month returned from a lap around Austraila towing a caravan. My petrol done 260000 and my gut feeling is I will have to do a rebuild long before the desiel does and I won't get anywhere near 450000.
See Ya

Just a warning about 4500 petrol Landcruisers they hate gas that much that the cylinder head will need to be rebuilt at around 120000 k's if your lucky a little longer if you have the valve clearances adjusted every 20k cost around $300 call that economical after spending $2000+ for the LPG conversion go turbo diesel the 1HDT-FT as fitted to the late 80 series was a very nice engine returns about 11-12 L /100 same engine fitted to the 100 series but electronic with IFS front suspension.

Cheers
