Hi All,
Just got back from a short 4 day trip around the countryside.
We left
Broken Hill on Tuesday morning for
White Cliffs. Stayed at the Underground Motel. Nice place, good food and a very friendly "family atmosphere". There is heaps to do and see around
White Cliffs and we thoroughly enjoyed looking aroud. Recommend "Jocks Place" Jock is a real character and it was a very entertaining look into the life of an opal miner.
From
White Cliffs we went north the the
Bourke -
Wanaaring - Tiboobura Rd. Then on to Tib. On the way we stopped in at Reola Stn to have a look at "The Big Shed". A shearing shed built in abou 1989 where the average is 2800 sheep per day from 16 stands.
Someone was asking about the
Bourke to Tib Rd a couple of weeks ago.
Well we met the Rd just west of Wanaring and it was fine all the way to Tib. There are a couple of areas that are still drying out and you need to keep your eyes open especially in the floodways where it can be a bit rough but a common sense approach should see you safely travel at 80 - 100km/h at least that's what we did.
We stayed at
the Granites in Tib and that was OK too. Probalby not as interesting as staying underground but it was clean and comfortable and the people were friendly and helpful. We had a good look around Tib, Mt Wood and
the loop road. Climbed
Sunset Hill for the 360degree view and then set off south for
Milparinka.
What an amazing place. If you ever doubted how tough the early
explorers, miners and settlers were then go visit
Milparinka. The people who live there now are no softies. But once again the bush hospitatlity can not be overstated. We stayed at the Historic Albert Hotel. The food was great, and the advice about what to see was spot on.
From
Milparinka we went SW to Mt Browne goldfields and continued south from there avoiding the Silver City Highway as much as possible. Time got the better of us and we ended up coming down the Highway for the last 90k or so
All in all a good trip staying in motels rather than
camping made it a bit different.
The "shuddering end came when I discovered I'd lost my Akubra and we got home to find the
water bed leaking and soaking the carpet.
Oh
Well! We did have a good break. Work Tomorrow.
