I'm a relative newbie. My 2001 Challenger can with Bridgestone D689 H/T 265 70 15's. In a nutshell - bloody awful; bald in only 28K kms, lousy in the dry and deadly in the wet. I'm looking for new tyres and once bitten, twice shy. Need good bitumen handling, particularly in the wet. Don't want too chuchy a tread pattern as I believe they tend to dig into the sand.

Mostly on-road with some off-road and beach work. I'm considering Yokohama G011 +II's or Dunlop PT1's.

I'd appreciate any worthwhile feed-back.

I ran Cooper AT's on my Challenger. Didnt notice the noise at all. I now run Cooper ST's on the Hilux and they a bit noiser. Compared to the wife chatting, or the music blaring - you cant hear the tyres.

Cheers,

Glenn.

Tread pattern has got very little to do with sand performance. Tyre pressure is the key. See replies to post 16809.

So you should go for a tyre that will suit your other requirements and whatever you get will probably involve a compromise between on road and off road performance/capabilities. Search the archives as there is more info/opinions than you can poke a stick at.

I've got the Yokos you're considering. Have only done about 8000k with them so can't really comment on wear but they've been excellent recently in heavy rains both on the tarmac and in heavy, cloying mud (red and, much worse, black). No experience with them on beach yet.

I'm currently running Olympic Overlanders. They are looking good for 60 000kms+, the tread pattern is not particularly aggressive but they have never let me down off road although anything very muddy is a bit hairy. Great on the beach and very quiet too. Price was pretty good as well.

I'll throw my 2bobs worth in. I just replaced my 02 challenger tyres with 31x10.5 lt 15 .A much cheaper replacement was advised it was legal and the speedo, going by the tacho never altered any. Fitted and balanced for $125 each a bargain !

I have just put 18k on a set of 265/70/15 Cooper AT's. Happy with the offroad and sand performance. Jury still out on the wear. Worn 1/3 already, but I am assured that they wear better as they go due to increased area from the stepped lugs. Tyre guys reconks I will get 65-70k out of them - I am not so sure. Noticed a slight noise increase over the OEM Bridgestone HTs (which I agree are crap, and dangerous). Be ware of using the 31x10.5 LT tyres as I was advised that most do not have the speed rating of the original tyres. For example the original tyres are 112S (s=180Kph) and the LT's were 113Q (Q=160kph). Although I understand that 4wDs in Oz can be fitted with tyres with an N rating (140kph) I reackon your insurance may have an excuse to wiggle out of a claim.

You don't have to worry about the speed rating that much the main thing you have to worry about and will get you in to strief with insurance companies is the load rating.
It cannot be less that standard

I agree with Green man
The Speed rating has to be no lower than N (140 kph)
The load rating is the thing that is the problem.
I have a 2002 Challenger and could not fit 31X10.5R 15's as the only tyre listed on the placard was a 265/70/15 with a load rating of 110
All the 31's were a load rating of 109 and therefore illegal. However if you get the tyre placard from the new 2004 model it lists a 255/70R16 with a load rating of 109. So I presume you could then fit a 109 load rated tyre as long as the height difference wasn't more or less then 15mm (in queensland).
Hope it helps
