Hi - I have read through the debates about tyres, but outside BFG, Coopers and Bridgestone there seems to be very limited comment on other brands of AT tyres.

I had a recommendation for Maxxis AT's, but the feedback from tyre places has been mixed, both good & bad, and they are not the first brand of tyre mentioned. Not sure if this is a reflection on the tyre or the margin for the retailer.

Does anyone have experience of the Maxxis AT tyres

Depends on where you do most of your driving and how extreme you may want to go and most importantly - your budget. Cause that will determing a lot of things. (consider recovery costs if you get caught without a viable spare tyre in some remote location.)
It seems the big 3 or 4 Names in tyres are the ones proven to have least problems - hence most likely to be reliable in remote or harsh conditions. The lesser known (or discussed) tyres may have not built a solid reputation - Most or us are unwilling to risk unproven tyres in remote areas when reliability is the main criteria. ( How unadventurous you may say?----------- I,d rather pay the extra $400 and know I dont have to change a tyre half way up a rocky hill.) Having said that - If the vehicle is mostly around town then there are less concerns.

If you have little personal experience with tyres I'd go for tyres that have the most positive reports. Hang the expense. Most certainly search the archives.

My opinion - what do I use?? I spend approx $1100 on 4 and to remain unbiased I wont mention brands cause thats just my opinion and experience.

Well I have tried Hankook, and Kumho and had poor mileage and performance from both, went back to BFG and havent had a problem since. as the flasher says go with a proven brand unless youre mainly around town or can try them out when youre with others who can help recover you.

I haven't had any experience with the brand you mentioned, but I have had a good run from Kelly Safari AWR's, and received 75,000k's, and there is still enough tread to use them on my C/T.
I just had a new set of the same put on and they have an 85,000km warranty.
I know warranty's don't mean much, but it is still something. My GU does quite a lot of offroad work in some very remote areas (Len Beadells tracks), and the tyres have always been good.
Approx $270 each.

The reason that most of the talk is on BFG, Toyo, Goodyr, Coopers is that they are the goods. The others can be a real lottery.

Good old saying
"poor people cant afford cheap things".
Meaning you save $10 now buyin the cheapies, but when it holes/falls apart etc in a months time, you have to spend $200 on a new one.

Look at the Ply of the sidewalls and tread, thats a start.
then look at where you intend to go.. thats another good indicator.

I am with Truckster here.

Buy quality and buy once. It's cheaper in the long run.

Ive had BFG AT's on all my 4WD's, but have just bought some cooper ST's, so far they are better than BFG's - but that is just my opinion.

I do agree with truckster - buying cheap is just false economy....

Gooday,

I have had very good results with toyo tyres. up to about 60000 at the moment and that includes towing a heavy van. i rotate the tyres front to back every 10000 ks. i have m&s tread at the moment and will be going for the a/ts next. a mate has the new a/ts on for just over 100000ks and that includes bush track driving for about 1/2 of the time. my tyres are 10ply which makes for a bit of a hard ride but they do stand up to the rigors of 4wding. just my 5cents worth as the final decision is up to you.

Regards

Bob

Operandi,
After speaking to local tyre bloke and to one user on this site, I bought Hercules AT in a 10 ply tyre. Won't tell you the price as that is not important. Three others I know have now bought them also for other vehicles than mine. Have travelled between 5,000 and 30,000 on them between us, no problems with any tyre yet. They do not handle as well on the black stuff as the tyres mentioned above but look like lasting as long and the dealer hasn't had one back yet from anyone in our local area, some of which is very hard on tyres. Look up their web site at.

http://www.chapelcornertyres.com/hercules.php.

This is only my opinion so take it as wrote. I can offer more info if you are interested
