What the!
I had (past tense) two Kuhmo 195/15 LT tyres on the old van they had plenty of tread, I would say they were old tyres (new) when put on the van being prepared for sale.
Well at about 95kph 70km out side
Kingston SE the LH van tyre disintegrated no dramas rough sound from rear and van leaned to the left, slowed down with virtually no brakes used and pull off the road. Bits of rubber for 50 meters tube flapping out side casing, bits of wire all over the place and cloth from inside the van now on the outside.
Ah
well lets get down to changing the tyre, the old farm jack worked a treat, the 12v ($80) impact wrench work a treat (ever tried swinging a tyre brace under a van?). 45 minutes later were ready to roll again. The plastic tyre
well was also whipped to death, a roll of fabric duct tape and some poly fabric should hold until I can effect some permanent repairs,
SWMBO noted that nobody stopped to offer assistance (no big deal I thought). Although one lady in a 4WD did stop as we were packing up did stop to check on us, then asked is we would take some keys to her husband in
Kingston BP servo as she had locked him out of the matrimonial home.
The tyre man in
Kingston advised me the rim was %$#%^ed and the Kuhmo tyres of this type and age were notorious for exploding like this one and showed me all the little fine wires extending from the inside, broken away from the steel belt. So it was a new tyre, rim and another new tyre for safety on the other side.
We that was a grand start to our two week tour of the SE.
Any one else heard of this KUHMO bad batch?
Keep on wheeling.
