I have just read the article in the Decemder issue of Caravan and motorhome which sayes that fitting extractors to a Toyota Landcruiser will increase the power by 13.5% and reduce fuel consumption by 15%

I have a 1985 landcruiser , petrol , with a 3F motor

Has anyone got experience with doing this if so

did it work
did it increase power
did it reduce fuel consumption
how much did it cost

Hi Rod,

I cannot answer your questions, but I would be interested in the responses. I too have a 3F engine, and would appreciate assistance in reducing the fuel economy.

Cheers

Rod,
That was my original donk...it improved acceleration....fuel figure was 6.5 - 7.5km/l with half ton + lightly loaded roof rack (no swag!), 2200rpm max.

The biggest improvement I got was fitting an MSD5 (I think thats the number?) and an Allison electronic points. The figure above is for that combination.

I can't remember the $......1986!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The engine braking was worse ( I remember that much!)..IMHO the Allison & MSD was a better investment.

Sorry I do not what a MSD5 is

Are Allison electronic points fitted by an auto electrician

Cost , ball park , say to compare with the $ 600 for extractors quoted in the thread

MSD = Multiple Spark Discharge US made, used often in dragsters
Allison came from TANDY in '86, Autobahn carries spares, don't know if the unit is still available....Gooogle?

Very easy to fit both units...once the timing is set on the distributor it doesn't change.

With the mag test giving 13.1l/100k it would be useful to know the load carried etc details...details....details!

Mark me confused!...the tests were done on a 1995 80 series 1hz DIESEL? I have been under the impression that diesels needed some back pressure to function efficiently and that 'full flow through' exhausts wasn't a good idea........another myth?
Those figures won't translate to 3f.

My links to Cranecams & MSD didn't come out....can't figure out the hyperlinks........the $ are >>>>>>>>>>>>budget...

So all the did was fit extractors, no tuning, no complete exhaust change over, no new muffers?? Just extractors.

13% more power? AND a massive 15% better fuel?
You can make figures do anythign you want really, drive 'slower, or not as harsh', etc..

Amazingly you rarely hear of people doing mods and saying that they did nothing.

Extractors alone are about $400-600 depending on brand.

I agree with Truckster on those figures. My first Troopy was an 83 FJ45 to which I fitted a 3F motor with Genie extractors & electronic ignition. The performace did improve, but only by about 5% on the economy (I think the best I got was an extra 1-1.5 km/litre depending on which way the wind was blowing) The acceleration & pulling power on the hills did show a mark improvement after the extractors were fitted, but without doing a dyno test I couldn't tell by how much.

2000 43.6 hp 49.6 hp
2500 53.8 hp 61.4 hp

Rod

My 1st 4x4 was a mid wheel base 1985 cruiser with the 3F. I had it on gas too.

I put extractors, a 2.5 inch exhaust with a straight through turbo muffler.

The first thing I noticed was how much quieter and smoother the engine was at idle. It drove far nicer and smoother in every respect.

I did not do any performance tests on a dyno or anything like that but it was definately a better car for it.

I never noticed any increase or decrease in fuel consumption. I just remember it being a thirsty bugger! most of the time.

Mine cosy around $450 fitted back in 1993. I strongly recommend the conversion.

cheers

Our troopy has got a 3F engine fitted with extractors, by the previous owner. I average about 15l/100km, seems to go OK , has a nice exhaust burble! When I tried to get it insured, on of the big name insurers told me that they don't insure cars with extractors!
