Good question. Go diesel for outback travel but be aware that in the long term it is the more expensive option.

My choice would be the Diesel, a Diesel is approximately 40% more fuel efficient than the equivalent petrol vehicle, i.e. Diesel would need to be $1.40 liter and petrol $1 a liter before it starts to cost you more to travel the same distance, you will go 40% further on a
tank of Diesel.
Most people I know that have bought their first Diesel would not go back to a petrol because they find the Diesel so cheap to run.
Some people will say they cost you more because they need servicing every 5000km I’m ok with that its their money, 10,000km is as safe as houses to change the oil and filters, my own 1990 Diesel Cruiser I change the oil every 20,000km whether it needs it or not and when sold with 240,000km on it still didn’t use oil, (only ever had one Toyota service at 1000km).
Got a good price for the car when sold as the Diesels hold their value, the last I heard the car was being used to tow a caravan around Australia.
Go with the Diesel

Hi petza,if the wagon is going to be your only drive i would go for a petrol,as diesel dont like short trips. You still can drive in the out back in a petrol, but you have to organize your self abit.Ive had both diesel and petrol patrols gq.I did find that the desiel costed me more to keep on the road, and also had less power (non td)I had to replace the injecters 3years ago $3000,Ive replaced the the petrol pump on my currant gq,$400.Ok you do get better milage out of a diesel, but in a petrol you have more power and if you use your head you can get good milage from a petrol,Also where i live diesel costs around 10 cents more per Ltr.I hope this helps.I find this
forum is very desiel bais,so i hope I can add a little balance
kind regards uppy

the biggest downside with adiesal is usually its lack of power - HOWEVER I know a few people with td Navaras and be all acounts power is far from an issue. sounds like the go to me
