Hi guys.
I have a 1HZ105 2001 cruiser which had the front diff cough up what appears to perhaps be a few teeth of the crown/pinion... It was sadly 4 weeks out of the factory warrantee but with only 38,000km on the clock. I'm the second owner and I know the full service histiry of it and what treatement it had before me.. Also, being a part time 4WD (not getting out bush nearly as much as i like) the front diff's prob only been engaged for maybe 250km at most. Further more the front end had been just check out for what I thought may have been the front axle seals leaking just before the warantee ended.. and this was the first time I've engaed the front end since. From investigating, it appears they 100ser Cruisers have an appaulingly weak front diff, and are prone to tear off teath if under load in reverse.. I had fulled a friend out of a hole in reverse only shortly before this problem occured..
Toyota is now (after me pushing the point) saying that they can apply for after warantee assistance only after they pull the diff apart and explore the problem. And for them to do anything I 1st have to
sign a waver stating that if the application is rejected then I'll pay the bill. I thought this was rediculous given the circumstances of the extremely low km's espec on the almost unused front diff...
Sorry for the essay.
Any suggestions would be most welcome...
Regards
Nathan

Who checked out the front end?
I would be inquiring as to what they did.
I stand to be corrected but I believe it's the 100 series that has had issues with the front diff, not so much the 105.
How do you know it's teeth, Have you opened it up or did the dealer?
Given the low k's and 4 weeks out of warranty I would be discussing the issue with Toyota head office direct.

Canon Toyota in Heidelberg checked the front end.
They said they checked in the hubs that there was no oil.. And changed the diff oil as it was so old (and thick??) (3yrs) despite the low kms..
4WD Hire Service in Tellamarine told me they believe they are teeth off the crown wheel/pinion.. and their national office said they've had this happen before..
I've spoken to a manager (as high as I can go) at Toyota Customer Service... She also insisted that I must
sign the form or they won't open the diff to make to applic..
The diff hasn't been opened yet. Just what on the drain plug magnet after 2 oil changes...
Toyota's really not being helpful...! :(

Reading between the lines, your telling us it's an ex hire vehicle ?
You may have to deal with Toyota and foot the bill.

No! But I know the mechanic there!
It used to belong to the
Croydon SES. I bought it from the auctions with only 14,000km on the clock, n they have told me it was basically on the bitumen its whole life bar 2 or 3 brief trips on the dirt..

Yeah Sure, they are heavy so tie it down
well as it will dent your fridge on the first corner you go around.

Apparently a locker will help from what i've been told, a mate has a 99 hz105 and he mentioned while talking about this very problem he said that they mostly let go in reverse something to do with the crown & pinion not meeting correctly in reverse, anyway a diff lock is supposed to help stregthen this problem.
Another option.

An arb locker with stronger carrier than standard, and a solid pinion spacer makes the front diff alot stronger, and virtually fixes the cw & p issue.
Doing reverse recoveries, and buying cars at auction, and expecting warranty as second owner, when out of warranty, are both things that should be thought out
well before attempting.
As for signing a form to pay, you can thank all the previous people who complain, and turn what they think is a warranty claim, into a legal battle for them having to get you to ensure you will pay for what you should be paying for anyway IMHO.

THIS IS A TOUCHY SUBJECT. TOYOTA CAN DO WHAT IS CALLED A "PRIOR". THIS IS WHERE THE PUT IN A REQUEST TO TOYOTA FOR PARTS AND LABOUR WITHOUT PULLING THE DIFF APART. THE MAKE AN ASSUMPTION ON WHAT IS NEEDED TO DO THE JOB. ;IE CROWN WHEEL AND PINION. THIS SAVES YOU FROM HAVING TO PAY IF TOYOTA DOES REJECT THE CLAIM. IT HAS A 90% SUCCESS RATE THOUGH AND MOST DEALERS WILL DO IT. IT SEEMS THE DEALER YOU ARE USING ARE BEING STUBBORN. MAYBE TRY SOMEONE ELSE. I DO WORK FOR A DEALER IN
MELBOURNE. IF YOU FORWARD YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS TO ME I WILL TELL WHICH DEALER CAN DO THIS FOR YOU.

Hi Stevie.
My email is nathanlepage@lycos.com.
I spoke to the Service Manager at Canon Toyota again..
He said he cannot to a 'Prior' until they've pulled it apart.. Even though I have a couple of teeth from the crownwheel/pinion in my hand..
So I asked if we can put in a prior for ONLY the crown and pinion. He said he can't do that.. he 'needs' approval from Toyota 1st.
So I called the Manager at Toyota Customer Assistance (I managed to get her #). She sounded annoyed and said that's not in her ball
park - to go back to the dealer and he needs to contact the Warranty Department.
So I called him (strangely he was too busy to take my details) and am calling him again in the morning..
I am hoping that they will at least put a 'Prior' for the crown and pinion (they come as a set), and at worst i pay for other damage.. (eg. bearings).. hmmm...
Im getting really annoyed at them...
Thanks for your insisghts mate!
Regards
Nathan
ps. If you know a dealer that would be more helpful that would be great!
