Hi all,
I have a friend who is looking for a newish solid axle 4x4. Thinking that a Cruiser or Patrol is too big for him (only himself and girlfriend) we thought about the Discovery.
We are just after some info to help us start. I know not much about Landrovers in regards to what to look out for but have heard they have more than their fair share of problems. However I have a another friend that is onto his third Disco in 8 years and loves them.
They appear to be pretty capable machines.
He is looking for a 5
seat diesel/manual.
Do any of you guys have any tips on what to look out for good and bad?
Any worthwhile modifications?
Any particular models to stay away from (Although would prefer no older than 2000 but newer the better)
Going rates for these vehicles?

I think you summed it up.....Go for a late model Disco and he will love it . The Td5 is a great motor and the late model ones have a better interior.The only reason I didnt buy one was the front interior is no the best if you are over 6 foot tall and largeish.I found I was a bit cramped in with no streaching leg room.Dont discount the petrol models either.Get him to try both the little V8 is a perfect motor .
The only mod's I here about the late model disco's is putting the diff locking switches back in and in the petrol ones go fast goodies for the motor.unless he is loading the car for 5 people and all their gear they will love it.

Main reason for diesel is economy. He is not into the big trips (things change though) but he is concerned over reports of averaging over 20L/100km in the petrol but low teens in the diesel.
Lot of other costs to take into account though of course.

TDI models have a timing belt that needs changing every 100K Km. Something to look out for. Newer TD5 models use chain so not such an issue. Beware of the early S11 models that didn't have the facility to lock the centre diff. That was a bummer.
Other than that they're pretty good rigs with no more probs than your average 4WD.

I have heard that timing belts can be an issue on these. Heard 2nd hand reports of engines destroying themselves from a broken belt.
I've seen CDL kits for these also so perhaps not too much of an issue but would be nice if you didn't have to.

Correct about the belt issue ... same as any OHC engine with a belt.
CDL kits .. beware. LR in their infinite wisdom and no doubt a fit of pique released one model that the kit wouldn't fit. Bloody drongos.

We will definately steer clear of that model then.
I remember a friend that had an early disco years ago that you had the choice of low or high range with the diff locked or unlocked in either.
Know if they still have a low-unlocked option?
Think the lever movement was forward/backward for H/L and left and right for L/UL.

Zacary same now on all models,
well manuals at any rate. Not sure about the autos.
H or L, locked or free. I don't usually bother locking the centre diff unless the going starts to get tricky e.g. not usually necessary on beaches up this neck of the woods.

How about aftermarket parts?
I have read on other forums that it is sometimes cheaper to order from overseas. Not too helpful when you REALLY need that part though.
Apparently there is an aftermarket LandRover parts
shop in Fairfield which is handy as we are in
Brisbane south.

FWD Motors.
I bought a clutch kit (complete) from them for about $500. The same manufactured part as OE fitting (but in original manufacturer's box). LR wanted about $1000. Those LR boxes must be bloody dear.
Same applies to most other parts and there're quite a few different suppliers all over the country. Email/phone order and the bits arrive in a day or so.

Servicing and parts are not that expensive if you don't use an authorised LR dealer.
I have been servicing my Td5 for the last 2 years by none authorised LR specialists.
They have been great.
I have a 1999 manual Td5. Ive had it since new it has been a gem I know have 135000km in the clock and no major probs. I have modified it along the way, just to make it more of a beast. I have raised the
suspension, put in a CDL and RDL. ALso I have had the computer chipped to give me around 35% extra pwr and torque.

Hi All
just to shed a bit of light in your quest for the disco 2
They are prown to engine oil leaks, sump rocker and cam cover. The first 2 are easy any DIY mechanic can do, the cam cover is a harder job with the head coming off to reseal.
Engine coolant leaks with no signs externally will be a head gasket fairly common.
The transfer boxes in are a bit weak but not all fatal depends on your style of driving.
fuel pumps tend to be another common problem this again is a DIY job.
The abs / traction system can cause a problem with front hubs or disc's.
With the TD5 make sure it has oil and water and change the oil and fuel filter frequently.
Electrics not to much to worry about as it is all black box.
Having non L/R dealer service is a cheaper way of doing things but if there are electrical warning displays on dash it may require a dealer to investigate an rectify also resetting vehicle compouters.
There was only one year of vehicles that had no CDL, the 99's had the gear inside the transfer box, I have just fitted a electric CDL kit from AMV in
melbourne to
mine, its a DIY job couple of hours work. To find out if you can fit a CDL kit you need to feel around the front part of the Transfer box for operating post sticking up, it has 2 flat sides.
Consider having ACE fitted on your
suspension it makes the world of differance in on road driving, no body roll at speed through corners.
They haven't as yet suffered from rust or corrosion.
