I've just returned from a trip to Fraser Island and found some oil coming out of the sump through a hairline fracture in the casing.
My good friends at Nissan have said that because the crack is accompanied by an impact mark it will not be covered by warranty. As the vehicle is still at Nissan I haven't seen the impact mark.
As you can imagine, the cost to repair will not be cheap.
Has anyone else had similar experience, and perhaps better luck, with warranty claims?

What really bleep es me off is when it is when you have a warranty claim and the people who will be paying are the same people who accept or reject the claim. They are also same ones who charge like a wounded bull to have a look and then say no sorry it's not under warranty, here's the bill.
Have it welded.

So the wack caused the crack, they should warrant it?
Why not get it welded instead of replaced, that should not set you back more than a slab.

It surprised me that the damn thing would crack so readily doing the things it was supposedly built for.

Taking a hit is what a bash plate is for, not a sump.
I don't know how exposed your sump is but perhaps something was flicked up at it?

I think Ute hit it, sumps arent bashplates, but agree with you, that they should be sort of solid.. when you tap them with a hammer you can hear how tinny they really are :(
Bashplate hey. AWILL4x4 WHERE ARE YOU AND YOUR WELDER MR.?

With the kinds of hits I've given the under belly of my 4wd's I'm suprised I have never cracked a sump, I would have imagined that you would have to have been absolutally flogging it! Either that or the car is just bleep weak. I drive a 3.0L TD Patrol and to even hit the sump with the rigid axel would have to be a challange I reckon.
Bloody warranty cop outs, gives you thebleeps!

If the crack is due to impact then I can't see why it should be a warranty issue. Sumps aren't desingned to withstand impacts (except small ones possibly) that's why we fit bash plates, warranty is there for manufacturing defects and faults. You wouldn't expect a new door if someone dinged it in a car
park as happened to my g'f new car at 2 days old : (

If its not covered under warranty it's covered under insurance , so whats the issue . For a sump to crack , you slamed it into something. Easy job to remove , even esier to weld .

Stuart, This may or may not be relevant.
I was speaking to the consumer affairs about my issue with the 3.0 litre engines.
I was told they had a number of enquiries going with Nissan currently, one being cracked sumps.
I do not know your vehicle, but it may be that a common problem is emerging.

hairline crack???
This is mild steel. No sort of impact will cause a hairline crack. It'll just bend.
You might hit it hard enough to rip a bolt hole or something, but not make a hairline crack.
Or were you at -40 C at the time?
Sounds like your ding has opened up a crack caused during the pressing in manufacture by using bad material.

Yes I know how you must feel. My Patrol has a crack in the rocker cover and this was not caused by something hitting it ! But Nissan wouldn't wear it!!
It has to be a weakness in the initial manfacture.
But try and get Nissan to admit it.
Yet they seem to replace entire 3l TD engines!!!

I think you will find the 3.0l sump is made of cast alloy except the very bottom of the pan. That takes about 10 minutes to take off and about 5 minutes to weld. If the alloy part is cracked, its an engine out job as the sump has 3 bolts at the rear holding it and they are located behind the flywheel.
I have seen a similar design sump crack in a 5.7l commodore vx ute. No impact or damage to splash tray anywhere. It has to be a manufacture fault.
From the 3.0l that come through my workshop, I can't see how you could crack the alloy part of the sump and I would think the pan is protected by the front diff.
Best of luck.
