here's some suggestions [had similar issuesin my GU]:

1) I wonder if it is the sensors on the bottom radiator tank. Highly likely.

2) Are the cooling fins completely free of dirt & junk? My "clean" rad had 750 grams of very fine bulldust etc in it.

3) ask the question on the patrol forum, which is
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Patrol4WD/messages

4) if in Adelaide try Highgate Air in the CBD

Cheers

I had a similar problem with my Mav. I fixed it by cleaning the dirt out of the condensor core, the system needs it to be free of blockages or it just freezes up and wont flow.

vince76, I've got a '98 Patrol petrol wagon too and it did exactly the same thing during a Pilbara summer. Very boring indeed.

I took it to some mob in Karratha who let a small amount of refrigerant out of the system. He assured me they switch themsleves off because they get overpressurised. Still did it, but to a lesser extent. I'm still not convinced about this.

I also took the radiator out and thoroughly cleaned it to get rid of spinifex, dust build up etc. It was surprising how much crud could still be washed away after blowing it out. Don't forget to clean the aircon unit too. Touch wood, it seems fine now.
