Any one know if you can go from Mt Stirling & Mt Cobbler to Myrtleford or Whitfield in December. As in track conditions & river crossings?
Cheers

i did one like that last x-mas from stirling to
lake cobbler then over
the razorback down to the
king river crossing above lake william hovell on to whitfield for fuel and bak ti william hovell for a quick swim then down below the lake over
king river past sandy flats then back over the river and up the steep rocky track to top crossing huts along the wabonga plateu down to
tomahawk hut and back to base at pineapple flats without seeing very many cars en route until we were back at base and then only 4 4wd had set up
camp in the area.
nice rangers were helpful when we were there too.
have fun get maps and plan
routes if tracks are wet or closed and think about escape
routes from all areas in case of fire especially in the hotter months .
cheers

Not a problem Jack. Even if they have a closure on Mt Stirling because of late snow it's usually open by the 1st of Dec. The
King River (above
King hut) has a coulple of bridges on it & the run up the staircase then accross to
Lake Cobbler is rarely ever closed then as
well. If you do get heavy rain, the steep bits on the Abbeyard track to Mytleford can be detoured via Williams logging rd so you will almost always get through.
Alternativly the run accross to Whitfield has plenty of options which are almost always clear. Exception being the crossings of the
King river on the Long spur & Sandy flat tracks which both have been known to wash a few 4x4's away after local heavy rain.
Great
views, good swimming & an interesting drive. Have fun, Cheers Craig..........
