To Gu lll 3.0 owners...has anyone had oil leaking around the turbo...took mine into nissan today and all they did was put some type of sealant around the bottom of the turbo to stop it ...sounds a bit dodgy to me...a mechanic mate told me that the turbo could be dragging oil from the engine and spitting it into the head...not a good thing as it puts oil on the top of the piston and it could blow the turbo and or the motor...any sugestions ?

Govo.
Because turbos run at very high temperatures they can not use oil seals like the ones on the rest of the motor, the oil that lubricates the turbo shaft is mostly collected by a groove in the bearing and returned to the sump by the small hose at the bottom of the turbo, however some oil will get past the catch groove and get into the air flow to the motor this is normal and does not damage the motor in fact it helps to lubricate the valves and the top ring. To decide if this oil is excessive is difficult. If you have to add oil between changes then it may be time to replace the turbo bearings, but dont do it to early because most mechanics dont have the gear to balance the rotor to the very high speed they run at. Eric, Spot-on! This is one of the best responses that I have read on this forum.
This is not a Nissan 3.0L problem, It is A turbo issue!
The same thing was happening to my 180SX Turbo, was always getting a bit of oil in the intake system, but never enough to warrent top ups between oil changes.

Sure that the leak is not from the small oil line to/from the turbo. mate had an oil leak around the turbe on his nissan 3 l and it took nissan mechanics almost 1/2 a day to find out the oil line had a small split in it. replaced line and hey presto, no more oil leaks. worthwhile to get it checked out properly and not do too much driving as i believe this may be the cause/contributor to the 3.0 l engines failure. less oil and pressure to turbo may mean that bearings/shaft wear too quickly and thus s...t happens.

hope everything works out ok for you

Bob

I've got a similar problem getting it fixed next week - not going near Nissan following recent experiences I've no faith in them anymore

Funny how Nissan seem to be getting this reputation Michael.

Customer service seems to stop once your money changes hands these days.

I will let my feet do the talking and walk into a diferent dealer yard next time I buy a car!

Cheers
