We have just found out that while on our trip around Oz our caravan will not be insured. RACQ says that if we are in another state on an extended tour and with no permenant address to house the van, than they cannot insure it.
as we only rent our home at the moment, we will be giving it up to travel for about 2 years. anyone else had this problem and who can we get insurance from at a good price for the trip for the van only.
tried DGAIN but we also have to insure the 4by with them to get the van insured and it will cost about twice as much as RACQ.
any suggestions please.

Have you tried Australian Pensioners Insurance..or something like that?
We had the same issue when we went on the road some years ago and in the end did not bother insuring both van and truck. We still don't bother with insurance apart from 3rd party property. Just drive carefully.

Hi there
I have my boat insured with SGIO (here in WA) and they told me that it was insured anywhere at anytime. I found this out when I rang to tell them that I had changed address and was concerned when a cyclone was heading this way.
The insurance assessor I spoke to said that they have people travelling all over Australia and that they cover their boats, caravans etc.
Hope this is useful.
Cheers
Wayne

I insured my camper with AAMI and read through the disclosure statement and didn't see anything about not insuring whilst travelling.
Give them a call for a quote, they're open 7 adys.
Cheers,
Jim.

MOST insurance companies will not insure you when on an extended trip without a home address.
There are one or two who do (Can't remember who at the moment.)
Read the fine print VERY CAREFULLY.
Try a few of the dedicated caravan insurers.

Bob
Give GIO a ring.
Since being taken over by SUNCORP-METWAY they have a better outlook on insurance in general.
They may be able to help you.

No permanent place of abode.
It's done for insurance fraud reasons.
If you don't have a permanent address you don't exist on the electoral roles etc etc.
You can't be traced easily.

I wouldn't bother reading the disclosure statement too closely... negotiate with the insurer to get the cover you want and get it in writing!!! We are with AAMI in Qld and have done this with the Patrol... (we don't have a van or camper....yet!) but all our mods/accessories are insured via negotiation. Have found them extremely easy to deal with!
