2002 model.
Is it not still under warranty? I'm not sure of Nissan warranties but I thought 3 years was the norm these days.

Prob is 3 years 100k. If it wasn't still under warranty then his mate wouldn't be able to go and get the extended warranty.
Also I assume that the 'how lucky is that' statement is to do with it only having 8k to go on his warranty.

5th gear on the 3.0 is a common problem on those that tow alot, do alot of hwy in 5th gear, or run oversize tyres all the time hwy.
It chews the splines off the main shaft, which is caused by an engine vibration [hence the oil filled flywheel to try and damper the vibration] and this is why its more prevelent on the 3.0 than the 4.2.
The replacement gear has 10mm aprox more spline area where it goes on the shaft, but this doesnt cure the vibration which is the root cause, it just gives more spline area to wear before it goes.

Is this a definate 2002 model. Series II or III?
I have seen the Nissan work
shop manual that talks about the better 5th gear being installed Nov 2001 onwards.
So if this is a 2002 with the 'better' spline from the factory.....MMmm, Problems.
Please check it out.
Cheers

1991 GQ turbo Diesel, 298,000 klms and original EVERYTHING incl clutch & 5th gear, etc. etc. etc.. It has not had anything "mechanical" replaced- (except exhaust as the turbo was an add on.) Tows 2 1/2 tonne van and similar weight of boat. You don't only get "that" feeling in your Tojo.
Yes, I'd buy the extended warranty.

Yes I do ! and bear in mind that
mine is 8 years older, so stick that up your jumper and smoke it ! (Yes and the Tojo has an after market Turbo and 2 1/2 inch Exhaust). (120 kw).

For info, the 5th gear in my Series I, Dec 1999 build 4.2 turbo diesel spat the dummy a couple of weeks ago, 115,000.
Same problem as above, so it's not confined to Series II. Never towed anything.
Nissan came to the party under the extended warranty. New mainshaft and 5th gear.

Nothing wrong yet touch wood.

Goona,
Nope, was loping across the Nullarbor at about 100k/h when it let go with quite a noise.
But previous info has indicated the problem was only Series II from about Mar 2000 build.
Mine was definitely the short spline problem, so it appears that earlier Series I's have it as
well. Suggest you contact Nissan quoting your VIN to see if yours is included.

Aren't the 3.0 and 4.2 gearboxes the same? Also wasn't there probs with the 2001 5th gears in both models?

My GU spat 5th gear at 143000ks, on the way back from
Broome. Luckily I was only 2 hours from home. Out of warranty but Nissan still covered it. Spline problem. Does heaps of towing (every day about tonne and a half). Anyhow Nissan dealer put what he called a revised part in and away I went. Hope I get a few more k's out of the revised part but who knows or cares!
