A mate is thinking about buying a Ssanyong Rextron. (He has had 3 Patrols for a total of about 650,000km, and can down size a little. He appreciates it is not a Patrol in terms of size, clearance etc.)
It has a 2.7 L diesel, 5 speed auto. Heaps of extras as standard, and quite cheap at $ 44K. Good
Comments on this diesel motor appreciated.
We test drove one yesterday & we both were quite surprised.
It seems to good to be true, so what feedback can anyone give?
How does it handle on dirt etc?
Cheers

I followed one of these on Friday heading up
Port Wakefield Road past Bolivar. He pulled across in front of me to the right turn lane and had to gave it a bootfull to get across my bows (a bit close actually). The cloud of diesel smoke that issued from the exhaust of what looked like a near new vehicle was very surprising. A sustained dense cloud for about 5-8 seconds.
As to the vehicle, I had a quick look when I was looking for the Prado. Did not like to looks too much. If you think the new Prado sytlying is a bit "out there" then wait till you see one of these things close up! To me the curves and plastic bits give it a dowdy look - but then give it 5 years and that will be the way many vehicles look!
Can't comment on the rest of the package as I did not look THAT closely before heading off to the Toyota Dealer.....lol. The smoke thing may have been an isolated incident but you never know. Wonder if
mine does that?!?!
Cheers

Well . what can i say . If i ever bought one for work , I would die with it . No dealer in his right mind would have a crack at one . If you feel like feeding mechanic's go for it .
I would rather drive a 2 wheel drive

Massive depreciation on these because theyre NOT popular vehicles. You would want to keep it for a long time. I saw a 2001 model at a wholesalers near here for $17,000. Not sure how many k's it had done.

Hi All,
The rextons are powered by a mercedes engine and running gear built under license by Ssangyong, the better engine ones are the 2.7 TD as it is the common rail engine. the 2.9 TD is the older style where it has a mechanical injection pump. Also the 2.7 has more power then the 2.9.
In general they are good considering how much you pay for them.
Beware of the prices of parts as they are not the cheapest in the block. the supply chain for parts as started to improve over the last month which makes the parts easier to obtain from the dealers.
in the dirt it is as good as any wiht it's low ground clearance, it is not the worst but it is also not the best.
