I thought that I should give a bit of a run down of our four week Corner Country and Flinders Ranges trip after reading Roachie’s report. I am a man of few words though….

Our first night after leaving Melbourne was at Hattah Kulkyne National Park and we had nice camping there under beautiful trees. We then went to Mungo National park and spent a couple of nights there and did a loop looking at the Great Wall of China and ‘lake’ that dried thousands of years ago.

We the travelled to Menindee and stayed at Copi Hollow caravan park which was lovely – always nice to camp overlooking water. Then stayed at Broken Hill and promised to go back and have a better look. Loved the art and the rock sculptures in the desert park. Had a night in White Cliffs and look down and opal mine and tour of the underground bed and breakfast place.

Loved going to Depot Glen and Mount Poole and seeing the Cairn build by Sturt when they were holed up there for six months over summer

We drove onto Tibooburra and camped at Dead Horse Gully. Had a good meal at the pub and were lucky enough to find that they had fireworks that night and walked over with all the kids to find a nice fire and story telling with the locals at the Show grounds – Blue Light thingy for the kids and Ross the local copper was most welcoming. Got to sit around the fire and toast marshmallows with the local kids – wicked!

Drove through Sturt National park and to Cameron Corner, few snaps and moved on and camped half way up the Bore Track. Was nice easy driving. On to Innamincka and camped at Cullyamurra waterhole. Top camping, fun for the kids, pub food great, people at the store were lovely – got my “Had a cooper at the Cooper Creek” T-shirt!! History of the place is fantastic – I read all about the Dig Tree and so did my 11 year old Luke before we went there – it is a super special place!

Drove down the Strzelecki ‘Freeway’ to Arkaroola. Fair camping. Awesome scenery. Loved the Yudnamutana mine ruins. Camped at Copley and then met up with Gerke from EO and camped near Blinman. He showed us heaps of super stuff around that area. Met up with Willem who took us for a trip at Warraweena.

Now Willem is a man of surprises and he certainly turned it on… I was wanting to see some water in the Gorges and called to heavens for some rain. Thunderstorm came through and we (four cars) had to sleep in our cars the night on a little island between two forks of a stream. We were not really prepared and my shorts and T-shirt (kids had my jacket) and towel did not keep us warm. We walked down 100 metres from where we were stranded and the Sliding Rock creek was a raging torrent….thanks Willie for getting us out of the creek when you did.

We then camped at Brachina Gorge and did Sky Trek from there – forgot our EO card and missed out on a $5 discount - #@$%. Previous day drove up behind a Delica with an EO badge – flashed lights – pulled over - asked the driver – “You Tracie?” Was Wolfie and Tracie of EO fame and did Sky Trek with them the following day.

Problems – four flat tyres – thought that my Cooper S/T’s that were chipped up a bit would be OK but ….. Car developed a leak in the transfer case – slow leak and still not fixed…. 60 litre Engel died after Sky Trek- bracket holding the compressor broke and the compressor fell down and fractured a copper pipe underneath. Still in warranty and Engel gave me a brand spanking new one to replace it. Laptop screen died – could see enough to download my photos but no DVD’s for the kids ….

Hmmmmm – did I write more that Roachie???

Huge thanks to Gerke for his time with us – fantastic country, thanks to my sister Jennie who reads EO but has not posted yet …(needs encouragement); Willie, Pesty, Wolfie, Des Lexic and Rick for his advice. Too much for me to proof read so sorry for the typos.

Hi Andrew Seems you all had a good time, great report and a reminder of places where we have been or going to.
Scary being in those creek beds when they are dry & thinking of what they could be like in the wet.
Was good news re the fridge replacement but must have been a pain when it happened.
How did the Tvan go ?
How many klms did you do ?

Cheers

We did about 6000k's Bernie and had a great time.

Tvan was fantastic thought I have taken it back there for some fine tuning on the dust sealing as quite a bit of dust got into the kitchen area. Less into the storage area, some into the main body of the van when the seal around the main hatch kept falling down. Water level indicator stopped working and elastic in the tent area of the Tvan that goes around the hatch came undone and I had to unpick a seam and retrieve the ends and tie a knot in it.

Track are sorting all of this out and it should be all done by the time we go to Robe in a fortnight I hope!!

I would have to say that it was fantastic overall and it went everywhere the car went without any fuss - except when I told it to stay...... I am very happy with it and also with Track's attitude when I took it back to get things sorted out.

It did get some water in the canvas area the night that the huge thunderstrom hit and we had to sleep in our cars at Warraweena though we did not get back to our Tvan until late the next day so not sure where it came in. The rain looked like it had been super heavy and Jennie my sisters things got quite wet in their tents.

Hi Andrew,

I know you have written more than this for some examiners so we expect nothing less. Thanks for the report, I had a verbal on the Flinders end of things from Willie so was pleased to read your report.

The importance of breakages or acknowledgement of them and knowing that things can go wrong is important for us as readers.

We look forward to Jennie's posting too when she gets less tongue tied. She probably has an excellent point of view too. Come on Jennie, don't let Andrew say it all.

Good report Andrew - am surprised that for a man of your profession your grasp of the English langugage and use thereof, is very good. LOL.

Ruth,

is probably just as well it is all typed and not hand written though. I am sure that you and I would never be able to read it that way.

Good report Andrew,
We had no flat tyres at all between the 18 we had on the ground (3 vehicles all with trailers), but my Coopers have now done 26,000- and look like they've done over 40,000. NOT HAPPY JAN !!!

Ah, the fun of it all.............And now that it' s summer, camping up in those regions ain't so much fun, so will have to wait until 2005. Ho Hum.

Andrew, I am interested in a possible comment on your Tvan. Was it hired or is it yours? I don't want to influence any comments, so over to you.............

Cheers

Rick

Tvan is ours and I have made some comments above to Bernie.

Flinders Ranges were great - I could have spent another month there. Just incredible to see the storm and the speed the water came up. I have a nice video of Willem dancing to keep warm that I will have to bring to Robe!

Great report.
We just came back to Melbourne on Friday from almost the exact same experience. Dusty we thought. But now we know why, we were following you all the way.
We had 6 flats around Inaminka and a leaking fuel pump.
See you out there

Good to read the report. We have just returned from the same trip in reverse direction. Spent time at Wilpena and surrounds, did Sky Trek and other tracks and gorges. We followed the rain and generally had dry tracks with a few creeks still running. Did not get to Innaminka but cut across from Strezleckie Track at Merty Merty to Cameron Cnr and Tibboburra. We had no tyre trouble and only small problems with our new Sports Trailer over 400okm. I spoke to plenty who were experiencing flat tyres at Arkaroola and saw two examples of the wheel stud problem on Cruisers where the nuts have been put on too tight. Best camp site Montacollina Bore. Best experience. Fueling up at Hawker early morning and sharing the experience with at least 60 other 4x4 enthusiasts. Worst flies Arkaroola. Best thing I purchased prior to trip. Water Bladder 60 litres at Opposite Lock. Lay across rear floor and we had plenty of drinking water for whole trip. Major issue facing us all . Water and Fire wood.
Thanks for your report.
