Hilux Engine Issues

G'day all. I have a 1986 Hilux 4x4 with the 2.2L petrol engine. Occassionally when I hit a big bump weird things happen. The engine drops all power. It will idle happily but try and stall whenever it is revved. It will still drive, but reluctantly.

I have checked the engine when it has been in this state. There is still fuel in the filter and the float bowl of the carbie. All leads are on firmly (I believe it is a genral loss of power rather than a single cylinder not firing).

Turning the engine off and on half a dozen times "fixes" the problem and the engine goes fine again until the next big bump.

I have a recon long engine, distributor and carbie. The coil has been replaced too.

All I can come up with is a wire between the coil and distributor shorting? Could it be something in the ignition getting upset? The only common theme with the problem is big bumps or severe corrugations. It will run for months on bitumen without a hiccup.

Anyone have any ideas? It is a pain in the butt when I cant trust the old ute to get into the mangroves and back. Stopping in some of those muddy spots is scary. Dont want to take the new TD Hilux in there due to rust.

Cheers

Stads

Whats with driving amongst the mangroves anyway? Not a good place to be.

Possibly a bad connection to the coil and not enough power getting to it to make a decent spark?

Stads, sounds to me like you have crap in the carby, hit a bump loosens it up blocks the jets and presto down on power. With the air cleaner hose off the carby rev the motor to about 3000rpm and cover the carby with your hand until it nearly dies. Then remove your hand to see how much crap is on it. This uses the compression to suck fuel through the jets at much higher pressure than ordinary driving would. It may be necessary to do it a couple of times. If it doesn't work no loss and it didn't cost you a cent.
Good luck

Stads,
Not sure if this is any help at all. I had the same ute a few years back - had an issue with it losing power both engine and electrical every now and then. I had it at the Auto-elecs trying to fix the problem - but it still kept on happening (they still charged me $160 though!!).

So - I spent a good few hours looking for the problem - turned out to be a bad fuse connection in the main fuse box under the bonnet. I just got a screw driver into the fuse box and bent the contacts in so that they connected well. Never had a problem since!

Not sure if this is the same problem or not - but worth a try!

Hi Stads, check the pigtail from the dist. body to the points, sometimes it can become frayed and not make a good connection. When you go over the bumps you might be causing the break in the pigtail to jump around. Also when you go to acelerate the base plate of the dist. moves and the break in the pigtail widens.
Is it a engine miss or a complete loss of power.

Will, it is a complete drop in power accross all 4 cylinders. I once went through the process of taking high tension leads off one at a time to see if it was just one cylinder. This wanst the case.

I will try all of the remedies suggested above. I have sort of resigned myself several hours of replacing 18 year old wiring and cleaning connections etc etc.

I'm in Port Hedland and all the good barra holes generally require getting salty, sticky mangrove mud through your whole car. I religiously spend 2 hours with a high pressure cleaner after each trip trying to minimise the rust problems. However this issue dates pre-mangorve mud expeditions.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Stads

Stads I just has another thought, check the back of your ignition switch, they can wear out or come loose.

Hey Stads, i have a 86 4runner with the same engine, i had a problem (might be similar) once, engine was going fine, would rev ok, but when going up a slight hill it would die, we changed to like 3rd and it would rev at about 4 grand but not acelerate (was the same with all gears) then it eventually died.. never really found the problem, goes ok now tho. did a compression test, checked the leads etc and nothing abnormal.. just one of those thing with an old car and carby motor
