Hi There,

Im looking at getting a diesel GU II or III Patrol. I've test driven 4 of them over the past month and have noticed they all seem to have a reverberation or rattle at low revs as you accelerate ( between about 700 and 1100 rpm ). Ive noticed this with both the 3.0 and 4.2 engines too. Is this normal ? It seems substantially louder on the 2 utes ive driven. All have been manual boxes.

Also, a couple of them seem to be very difficult to shift out of low range. They travel from 2H to 4H to 4L smoothly but are extremely difficult to shift back from 4L to 4H. 4H to 2H is fine. I've only noticed this in the 2 utes ive looked at.

Any ideas out there ?

cheers !

Michael

Michael,

The Reverberation (as you call it) is normal, it is more noticeable in the 6 cyl 4.2 diesels, it is not a fault but a harmonics noise, it dissapears as the gearbox revs go higher.
With regards to the shifting, when you go from high to low and low to high you have to press down as you go past Neutral on the transfer case.

This 'reverberation' has been around since the first GQ in 88, especially the TD42 combined with the big gearbox and transfer!!! Does it sort of sounds like a growling noise?

Remember years and years ago, heard that in a GQ and wondered why they didn't fix it!!! ;-)

Yeh .. a very deep growl. On the utes it seemed to really reverb through the alloy trays. That would drive me nuts in no time.

Micheal,
I concur with what the ithers have said, the low rev growl is normal in fact some of the 4.2 toy/yotos have a similar sound.
Truck gearbox n all that.
Also shifting in and out of low range should be done at stop pushing the gear lever down when doing so, oh and do not be in a rush, steady as she goes. Good luck with your purchase.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

If you have noticed it in all of them, then it shouldnt be anything to worry about, its normal..

Michael,
Simple solution, want a car like drive? Buy a car.Want a real toy? Buy the GU and dont listen to the noise.
Just foolin'. They all seem to do it and I am wrapped in mine so just do it mate.
