Some PC's that use one of the Intel Chipsets have the ability to invert the screen. You would need to go into the Display properties to change this. Otherwise try a Google search for a scree inverting utility.

I have a IBM with ATI Chipset and it can be via the ATI CHipset. Personally, I have a small PC with an external 12" monitor, will only do 800 X 600 but ok for GPS stuff

Save yourselves the trouble of it all. if you run a windows based PC and not a applemac try this. hold in Alt + Ctrl + Down Arrow. <--This will invert the desktop image. Alt + Ctrl + Up Arrow. <-- This will rest the image to normal. As far as i know this works on all windows based operating systems.

Depends on your hardware. Some video cards / chipsets will do it, others wont.

Sounds like you want to mount a lattop upside down on th overhead console? I would discourage you from doing this, as the hard drive it not made to be used on its head. Why not buy a small external LCD screen and run it off you VGA port?

Laptops should only be used in a +/- horizontal way, especially when offroading at the same time!

CruiserHead, I've never seen a hard drive with "this way up" on it and have run them at all angles over many years and never had a problem. Moving a drive while its running can cause damage due to centrifugal force causing excessive side loads on bearings but just having it "upside down" wont make any difference.

it will when it is spinning in the car and you are driving over bumps, becuase at this point the arms are more likely to touch the discs causing bad sectors.

As to which way is up: The label of the drive goes up, and the circuit board down. The connectors should face into the middle of the case so the interface cable can reach them.

All drives these days use dual sided platters, with heads on both the "top" and "bottom" surface so which way up the drive is when you hit bumps makes no difference.
Yes, normally the label faces up if the drive is mounted horizontally, but many drives are actually mounted on their side in desktop computers and servers, and I've even come across some in Laptops that are deliberately mounted Label side down. It makes no difference to the drive, it's purely how the manufacturer or box builder wishes to mount them to best utilise the available space.

Cheers...
