Hello all,
Just recently had to take my Crusier back for a Engine noise on start up, Sounds like the oil pump is not working. Toyota have acknowldge the problem but tell me to keep driving till they find the cause. When cold it now has a knock on statup. I had the feeling this was a common fault when they produced a photo copy of a questionair asking about the vehicles driving conditions, I.e How many K's in a week, towing K's 4WD K's etc.
Its still under warranty however I would like to hear from anyone with the same problems.

G'day Pauldingo
I have spoken to my workshop foreman and he has told me that this is a commen
problem. Toyota have had technical meeting about this and still have not found the cause of the problem, they are however in the process of investigating. Bare with the dealer though they will find a solution to this, as your car is one of many.

gday paul.
i was talking to a toyota bloke the other day.
he was telling me about the problem as
well.
seems a few have gone the way of the 3 ltr patrol motor.(KABOOM)
toyota dont know what it is but the bigger problem in the mean time is the damage being done to the motors now starting up with no oil pressure on all the bearings.
he thinks they will sort it out but lets see what happens at 100000+ks and out of waranty.
OH WHATA FEELING

Fancy that!! After reading half of what is posted on this
forum we would all be led to believe that nothing ever goes wrong with Toyotas. Perhaps it dows after all!!

Could just be a leaky seal or somthing, sounds similar to the Old nissan 3.0L 6's, they used to do it all the time, a few seconds on startup then they were right, they still used to do 300k without blinking if looked after.

Thanks all
The first time it did it, sounded like the motor had NO oil. In fact was that loud I shut the motor down to investigate how much oil it did have. It sounded like an old clapped out diesel. From then on I only get slight noise on startup. If it last 300000K, I would be happy, but want guarantee that the issue will not effect the long term viability of the motor. Other than that LOVE the car

Get it in writing that you have been told to keep driving till they find the problem. If it was me it would be back at the dealer and not to be moved till fixed. I had a problem with my 4.5lt Landcruiser and they had trouble finding and when I came back at 5, they said couldn't find pop back next week. I laughed and said no way it stays till u find the problem and I jumped back into the taxi and went home. I got a call 3 days later they had found the problem and it's fixed.

I had a noise in my 100 series Sahara only on cold start up and only when in gear at idle. sounded like a really bad rattle. Would only happen on cold mornings too. Turned out to be the plastic engine cover touching the engine found out a friend with a similar car had the same problem easy fixed by he dealer.
I've had two V8 100 series the first one has done over 100K and rthe second one has done nearly 40K no problems with either.
This engine has been around for a long time now started out as a Lexus so I think if there was any major design problems as has been suggested they would have surfaced
well and truely by now.
Good luck
Cheers
Jeff

V8 LANDCRUISER ENGINE OIL PROBLEM ( Nov 2003 model ).
Just after 30k service left vehicle standing for about 4 days outside on slight incline
with cold nights. When started it appeared to have no oil pressure, fairly severe
clacking and banging from engine for about 20 seconds then seemed to get oil
pressure and orchestra left the engine pit. Tarnished / burnt oil smell evident with
some minor smoke from exhaust.
Took it to dealer who advised they had never heard of problem (now seems a bit strange ???? ), and of course now it had warmed up would not " strike up the band ".
Have left it for several days but no repeat of the tune yet, however now has greater fluctuation in oil pressure on gauge when under load or idle than the
gauge used to indicate.
Vehicle was serviced by Northern Suburbs Dealer in
Perth.
Trust GOOGLE will pick up this thread, as I could not find it, had to get thread
address from employee who chanced upon it.
Chirpy chirpy bang bang

It was defenitly Engine Knock, from no oil or the like. Like you in the summer months now I am concerned that next time I take it in it will be a quiet as a mouse. Only having done 49000K, its worring. The Toyota deal was good, they did give me a letter explaining they are looking into the problem, but we will see how long this lasts. The first thing Toyota have to find is the cause, then the fix could be a total rebuild. Like evryone you are at a big companies mercy and hopefully they do the right thing. BTW I do love the car, Power comfort and 4WD in one. What more could you ask for,(except less fuel consumption(It went to $1.12Ltr in Melb))
It will be good to see how all turns out and I will keep all posted.

Emailed this thread to my local dealer and asked they forward to Toyota.
Car is too quiet, got my first speeding fine in nearly 40 years of driving, as
with the old cruiser I had you could HEAR what speed you were doing.
Cant keep my wife out of it, she prefers over her Fairmont and a mate
bought one after driving
mine. (is late 2002 model not 2003 my error)
