in 4wd feels like brakes are on

howdy folks
i have a little sierra, ive had it for a week and im posting everything i can to find out bits about my car from all you clever people ;)
When i lock it into 4wd it feels as if someone has the brakes on, for instance if im driving 50 kph and push the clutch in, my car rolls for a while but definately comes to a stop gradually way faster than when its in 2wd.
Is this just cos the front end of my driveshaft is moving and creates friction? or is it a common problem? All i know is my pajero never felt like that and i wouldnt say it feels normal

Didn't you have a problem with the front wheel drive a little while ago ?
Not working or such similar thing ?

Mine does to an extent also....
I suppose whilst your vehicle is in 4x4 the driveline is trying to wind up but because you are on a loose surface it wont.....which in turn would have to give a little resistance i would expect.....

Has the Sierra got a centre diff and is it locked/lockable? If not, it sounds like you just don't use 4WD on the tar. Otherwise you'll get wind-up which will cause damage to the driveline.

When you engage 4 wheel drive you are engageing another diff another tail shaft
and 2 hubs also the gearing in the transfer case.
As you know your little Sussie is not that heavy so when you put your foot on the clutch it simply dosent have the weight unlike your pajero to keep turning all the extra stuff you have engaged.

The Suzuki does NOT have a center differential like the Pajero has. The Suzuki in 4H is in effect in the 4HL position on your Pajero.
You will break the transfer case or some other part of your driveline if you continue to use 4WD on hard surfaces.
What you are doing is putting the driveline under stress from the slightly different speeds of the front and rear driveshafts (related to tyre pressurediameter, and the effect of turning the car).

yep dont drive it on any thing other than loose dirt in 4h or 4l especially as your hubs are permanantly locked now if you do on solid surface like bituman you will have trouble because the rearwheel turn slightly faster than the front (I think about 52:50) so the front
wheels will act as a brake putting stress on the t/c

ok thanks everyone. but when you say its bad to drive even in 4h on bitumen, how can that be? because the manual says u can use 4h on slippery or wet roads (which are still hard bitumen)

wet biuman may provide enough slip between the back and front wheel - but I certainly wouldnt to many $$$ at risk

I wouldnt use 4H on wet bitumen, only on a loose or slippery GRAVEL road. What you're feeling is the tension growing between the gears in your transfer case and gearbox. Thats generally followed by a huge bang and bigger dollars to fix.

Hi Ryan,
Join a 4wd club in your area & you will soon learn all those things you are wondering about.
Your Sierra most likely a part time 4wd so Probably your trouble is dif wind up, do not drive in 4wd when on pavement or full grip surfaces.
