G'day all
I see a few pics here and tehre of vehicles operating in extreme conditions (usually competition) and they have the intake on their
snorkel reversed (ie facing the rear of the car), obviously to reduce the amount of dirt taken in directy through the opening. Is this recommended or does it end up giving you less air overall? At what level of dust/rain etc should this be done (eg travelling in convoy thru bulldust?)
Cheers
Rich

Gday Richie,
If the bulldust is thick in the air then some will get in the air system whichever way you turn the snork inlet. Some use a sock type foam filter over the snork inlet when in convoy. This seems to reduce the intake of dust to the main air filter. I believe that there is a new type of internal foam type sock that fits down the tube of the snork just after the ram.
I give my main filter a good clean after each days convoy work.

Richie,
The best way to avoid dust when driving in a convoy is to sit back out of the dust. I have been in convoy of seven vehicles and they have been spread out over 7klm. When convoy procedure is followed no one gets lost and no one has to drive in dust.
It is not only the amount of dust that might get into the vehicle both inside the vehicle it-self and into the engine air intake but also the fact that you can't see the road ahead. Turn the head of the
snorkel if you want but sit back and enjoy the view.

Got to agree with Wayne. If you are in someones dust for more than a few minutes, you are too close.
Imagine that you dont see a big washout, and roll your car. You'll feel like a complete turkey. Just sit back out of the dust
I have a
snorkel on my Patrol (4.2TDi) and had one on my Landrover, and personally found no difference in performance or economy with head of
snorkel facing either way. Landrover had a very slight drop with the cyclonic head on it, haven't tried one on Patrol.

Richie, you'll usually see that being done only at low speeds. Having the
snorkel intake reversed at high speeds completely eliminates any ram-effect benefit and may even cause some air starvation. As the high speed air rushes past the intake head it can actually generate a pressure differential that draws air out of the
snorkel fighting the motor trying to draw into it.
As mentioned above, in a convoy situation with "heavy/thick/dense" dust, it won't really matter which way the intake head is facing. Additional filtering (or increased distance) is your best friend in that situation.

So says the man WITHOUT a
snorkel . . .
I agree with it though ; )
I know a couple of guys that turn their
snorkel heads around in dust. In one it makes no fuel difference , but does seem to keep some dust out. There other certainly notices the extra fuel use (Jeep, straight six).

Well, before those ram intake thingies became common, snorkels had a centrifugal dust separator fitted. My ageing troopie came with one, it works perfectly in dusty conditions. You can see the buildup of dust in the clear bowl and know when it required emptying.
I use the ram thingie for driving around town and the centrifuge in the bush on dirt roads & tracks.

Hey flappan, just because I can't get one for the Pathy doesn't mean I haven't had one ... long before you could actually buy one from a 4x4
shop [wink]
Klaus, agreed, and that's certainly the best option if you are able/willing to have and carry both. In fact, if you can put up with the ugly look of it, the centrifugal one is the best for all applications (if keeping foreign matter out of the engine is your prime concern).

V8Troopie has the best idea the Donaldson Pre-cleaner for the bush and the ram for the city, the Pre-cleaners are fugly things but from personal experience they do work, imagine where that dust in the bowl would be if you didn’t have the pre-cleaner on, about the ram effect I recall reading an American hot rod book years ago where they did an experiment on the salt flats were they made a ram the size of the frontal area of the car and gained 1-2 %, so the effect of pointing the ram fwd should gain about .000001%.
As for sucking in dust a 4.2 litre engine with a volumetric efficiency of 85% consumes about 2500 litres of air per minute at idle and about 7000ltres of air at 2000RPM so at 100kmh it will even try to draw the air backwards i.e. from behind the
snorkel.

I turn
mine around when charging mud pits fast as the muddy
water sprays off the windscreen and straight down the
snorkel otherwise. If you look very closley at my rig pics you'll see the big mud pit I'm over the bonnet deep in, my
snorkel is round the other way, and a good thing too as
water was dripping off the back of it after I went through...

Thanks for all the feedback. Guess that there's no real positive to be gained by turning it around. Just thought it miht have been an option if ever I found myself in real bad conditions. Knew that hanging back out of any dust from vehicles ahead was the most sensible and obvious option, but was probably more curious than anything as to why some people do turn their
snorkel intakes around.
Cheers and beers

Hi Richie,
try this site for centrifugal cleaners, found them very helpful with my last 4by...
