Peter,
I haven't had an actual "power-up" done to my patrol, but have had the motor tuned a couple of times and have had a "full" free-flowing 3" mandrel-bent exhaust system bolted on. All the tune-up does is get the motor performing the way Mr Nissan intended (straight out of the factory, ALL 4x4's are less than perfectly set-up IMHO). The 3" exhaust allows the big oiler to breathe better but this is really only noticeable down low in the rev range, say from idle to 1800 rpm.
I know a bloke who chucked the factory Nissan turbo in favour of a larger one (not sure what type) and he also added a 2.5" exhaust. He reckons that made a huge difference to his performance.
I think I'd be looking at that aspect before I went down the road of getting the Nissan one bored out......that has GOT to weaken the whole unit IMHO.
I have also thought of adding a intercooler, but am not sure of the real benefits I would gain.
IMHO the motor is a strong unit and can take a fair amount of power-up before it would be overstressed.
There is a mob in qld (MTQ I think they're called) that do the whole power-up exercise. During our recent
Cape York trip I came across a really nice 6 wheeler GU Patrol and had a good talk with it's owner. He tows a large caravan and the 6 wheeler conversion means he can throw a whole pallet of grog on the back of the dual cab GU. He had the motor done up by this MTQ crowd and reckons he could "fly" up some hills he had previously had to drop back to 3rd gear to get over. He was stoked.
My concern has always been with engine "over-warming". I think the last time I had my engine tuned, the blokes in
Adelaide might have increased the fuel pump a bit too much and this could be the cause of my irritation. I added a new $1,100- aluminum radiator several months ago. Now, when pushed hard, the temp gauge still rises a bit above half way, but the air conditioning stays on as the radiator has sufficiently cooled the coolant by the time it gets to the bottom
tank (where the 2 sender switches that control the air-con cutout are located). I am trying to ascertain how best to add a EGT to monitor exhaust gases etc.
Sorry, got a bit off the track there, but IMHO all these factors are related and need to be considered when contemplating a power-up.
Good luck
