Hello,
Does anyone have any info who supplies the upgrade on the factory turbo fitted to the GU. I have heard boring out the standard turbo casing increases the turbo boost significantly and combined with the 3" bolt on exhaust system you can be looking at an increase from 114KW to around 170KW?
Cheers
Peter

West End diesel in QLD do a good job, though this is second hand as I have nothing done to mine.

Don't forget that ANY increase in power is going to cost a loss of reliability and longentivity. Nothing comes without a loss somewhere else.

Peter,

I haven't had an actual "power-up" done to my patrol, but have had the motor tuned a couple of times and have had a "full" free-flowing 3" mandrel-bent exhaust system bolted on. All the tune-up does is get the motor performing the way Mr Nissan intended (straight out of the factory, ALL 4x4's are less than perfectly set-up IMHO). The 3" exhaust allows the big oiler to breathe better but this is really only noticeable down low in the rev range, say from idle to 1800 rpm.

I know a bloke who chucked the factory Nissan turbo in favour of a larger one (not sure what type) and he also added a 2.5" exhaust. He reckons that made a huge difference to his performance.

I think I'd be looking at that aspect before I went down the road of getting the Nissan one bored out......that has GOT to weaken the whole unit IMHO.

I have also thought of adding a intercooler, but am not sure of the real benefits I would gain.

IMHO the motor is a strong unit and can take a fair amount of power-up before it would be overstressed.

There is a mob in qld (MTQ I think they're called) that do the whole power-up exercise. During our recent Cape York trip I came across a really nice 6 wheeler GU Patrol and had a good talk with it's owner. He tows a large caravan and the 6 wheeler conversion means he can throw a whole pallet of grog on the back of the dual cab GU. He had the motor done up by this MTQ crowd and reckons he could "fly" up some hills he had previously had to drop back to 3rd gear to get over. He was stoked.

My concern has always been with engine "over-warming". I think the last time I had my engine tuned, the blokes in Adelaide might have increased the fuel pump a bit too much and this could be the cause of my irritation. I added a new $1,100- aluminum radiator several months ago. Now, when pushed hard, the temp gauge still rises a bit above half way, but the air conditioning stays on as the radiator has sufficiently cooled the coolant by the time it gets to the bottom tank (where the 2 sender switches that control the air-con cutout are located). I am trying to ascertain how best to add a EGT to monitor exhaust gases etc.

Sorry, got a bit off the track there, but IMHO all these factors are related and need to be considered when contemplating a power-up.

Good luck

G'day Steve,
Mate, I would love to have a look at the pic's of the EGT install......is yours a 4.2L donk?
If you would email them to me ......
broa7042ATbigpondDOTnetDOTau
that would be greatly appreciated.
Did you have to drill and tap a hole in your manifold?
Cheers mate

Peter,

I have my GU booked in for the stage 2 upgrade with MTQ Toowoomba. I have been told they develloped the upgrade and they are the best. They use a Mitsubishi turbo (I believe) which is more efficient than the standard Nissan. Check out their site:
http://www.mtqes.com.au/
The stage 2 upgrade costs around $2800.

Rosco, I think you will find that MTQ's power up kit is to rework your current Nissan/Garrett unit. I'm pretty sure the bolt up pattern on the Mitsubishi turbo is different to the T3 Garret ones the GU's use so won't bolt onto the original Nissan exhaust manifold.
I know of one guy who had an MTQ (Dynamic) turbo system fitted to his GQ and he then bought a GU and was very disappointed with the performance so he swapped the MTQ onto the GU and put the factory turbo on the GQ and then sold it. He said the turbo on the MTQ system is miles better than the factory unit.
Regards Andrew.
ps, it may be worth your while to see just how much a new MTQ system costs, buy that one and have it fitted then sell the factory one. There's always a market for TD42 turbo systems.

Yea I heard putting in a new blinker globe also gives 10,000,000kw 4ft behind the car too..

Some people are pulling themselves very ferociously with the risk of self harm when they talk figures. And most are talking nowhere near the rear wheels more like in the drivers mind...

Agree with that comment, 114 to 170kw is quite an increase...probably quote that at the rears as well...pffff.

Thanks for all the replies,
It appears there is a lot more research required before proceeding with turbo alterations however the increased exhaust system seems to be tried and proven so that will be a start. The hearsay about the 114KW to 114KW came from a new GU owner who also claimed 7lb boost increased to 40lb by boring out the standard housing and fitting a larger impeller at a cost around $2300. Haven't been able to locate a manufacturer here in the West just yet?
Excuse my ignorance on this matter however like those before me I'm learning, could someone explain IMHO & EGT (don't you just hate acronyms sometimes?)
Previously owned MQ & GQ Patrols both naturally asperated, now with current TD42 am a little dissapointed with power when towing, frankly I haven't seen any improvement from the standard GQ?
Comments welcome.

Hi Peter,

Having just graduated for my PhD in TLA (Three-Letter Acronyms), I can tell you that:
IMHO = In My Humble (Honest?) Opinion
IIRC = If I Remember Correctly
AFAIK = As Far As I Know
are a few of the more common internet forum acronyms.

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature. A good thing to know something about if your have a turbo-diesel. Please see my site or this excellent USA article: Why EGT.

I'd agree with other comments that you should be able to get quite good performance out of your TD42 without resorting to turbo housing/impellor mods if you find a good diesel tuner.
