Whats the story with 'Grey Imports' blowing so much smoke?

Has anyone niticed how often they see a late model vehicle blowing smoke (quite often skylines or soarers) only to realise they are a grey import? Same with many of the diesels too. The other day I saw a late model japanese company van blowing smoke wildly... Then I got close enough to read the script on the back - it was a grey import company van! What an advertisement! Either these cars are stuffed or they look stuffed. What am i missing here?
(some of the more interesting imports for me would be the 'delica', but just seems way too risky)

I can only comment on the Delica.

Diesel is of questionable quality in Japan, to rough.

The first thing to do when you land one of these vehicles here is to replace the injectors. Problem solved.

As I said, I can only comment on my vehicle, but it seems to be the normal practice with greys.

Cheers

I know an owner of a surf and another with a soarer. Both grey imports.

I can't say that I have noticed either of them smoking.

I dunno but I see a lot of Mitsubishi vehicles blowing smoke after idle, valve stem seals I presume.

My import cruiser was the same. A trip to the injection specialists and I found that due to different fuel quality most imported vehicles are 'over fuelling'. A stint on the dyno and the boys get you back on the smoke free road.

You'll find a lot of imports have been "worked" before they were bought over. My brother has a 300ZX V6 Twin Turbo, he plants it and grey/black (raw fuel) smoke poors out the back, but it has had some fairly major mod's to turbos, blow off valves, exaust and computer chips to say the least.
Japs don't seem to be worried about fuel consumption when tweaking their cars, but it serves a purpose as I've been on roller coasters with less "G" force than my bro taking off from the lights. :-)

My Surf does blow a little more smoke than the ozi 1kz-te motors, however I'm led to belive that 1. Low k's over a long period of time takes it's toll on the injectors and they probbally could do with being replaced.
and 2. The Surf was a very early version and one of the first ECU controlled EFI diesels in a production 4wd. The electronically controlled fuel pump is set a little richer than it should be (or so I'm told).
The Ozi models prado's etc were brought out 5 year later than the surf's with the same motor, they had some time to tweak it and computers are little more advanced than they once were, hence I can't use a prado Dtronic on my surf, different ECU.
Under normal driving she doesn't smoke much, but if I stick the boot in and rev it high with my foot to the floor it'll spew some smoke out as the ECU is pooring fuel into the motor.
