Hi All,

Some time ago there was a discussion on this site about cleaning alloy bull bars. Mine had been stained with red mud for about 18 months now and while it was fading it was still not shiny and clean.

I had actually given up, I plan to fit a steel bar just as soon as I have the money for the winch and suspension mods to go with it arrives. (Been saying that for a while now and had to buy a new wall oven this week so it slides down the list again.)

Anyway a couple of weeks ago, after a trip through White Cliffs, Tibooburra and Milparinka it was covered in dead bugs. The pressure washer got most of them off but there were a few stubborn ones. I remembered that years ago a guy I worked with always washed his car with kerosene so decided to give it a try. Bingo, off came the bugs and the red dirt stain too. Looks like a new one. Apart from the dent I got when skippy didn't make it across the road.

But it is clean,

Kero's also VERY good at getting Bitumen of paint work.Used to use it on my road bike to remove the tar of the fairing and worked a treat.

Kero is good stuff, most people think it will damage the paint but from my experience it doesn’t, about once every 6 months after I have washed the Cruiser or the Merc, I get a bucket of clean water and put about a cup of kero in it, it floats on the top, then I get a rag and wash over the whole car getting all the tar spots off it also takes the oxide off the rubber and plastic, and cleans up the chrome , the good part is that the water takes the kero into the hard to get places and puts a layer of kero in the seams and joins in the body and hopefully helps prevent rust, after that I give the car a polish with Mothers 3 stage system including the Carnauba Wax, I haven’t got an alloy bar but if I did I would use Mothers or Maguire’s mag wheel cleaner to get a shine on it.

For aluminium, chrome, copper or brass I've used Brasso or Solvol Autosol for years. It'll shine like the sun when you've finished.

Brasso from good hardware shops and Solvol from auto or motorbike shops.

Yep kero is the go, my father inlaw has washed his xy falcon since new with it, and as mentioned above, it will prevent rust, and also maintains all rubber seals...
