Hey those who went to the 4wd show in Melbourne.
Did you see the Marks Adapter (Stand) 80 series with the 6.5 litre Chevy V8 diesel.
What a great set up fitted real well under the bonnet.
Bloody nice rig, did not ask what the fit up cost, Anybody got any idea ?

I got the 6.2 Chevy V8 diesel fitted in my 75 series.
Its not cheap ( depending on your wallet size, lol)
in my case 10 k swapover, old H2 engine being a runner.
This included a new 75mm exhaust, HD clutch plate and 90A alternator

Hi
I am considering this a little firther down the track with my 80 Series, and am wondering if a suspension upgrade is *necessary* as part of this conversion? Would you have any info that could help me in my financial deliberations on a changeover?
Thanks
Jack

Jack, I had an extra leaf fitted to the front suspension long before I changed motors. It was to compensate for the heavy bull bar and all the gear I strapped to it during a canning stock route trip. The suspension had not sagged over the years since the conversion.

I was told the Chev 6.2 is of a very similar weigth as the old 2H motor was but I would not know how it looked on the original suspension.
No idea about 80 Series either, sorry.

For around the same money, and to keep it all Toyota, a 1hdfte from the wreckers are now available, and with dtronic/unichip, exhaust they make good power, and engine mounts, clutch, flywheel, torque convertor, gauges, lines, wiring all interchangable.

The chev is lighter than the Tojo six and more economical, with heaps more grunt.

I bought my Defender with a chev diesel already installed. Vehicle came with all reciepts etc and according to them the chev cost 12 grand plus install. Engine was bought from Brunswick diesels who seem to be a very helpfull bunch of people.
Original 300 tdi was sold on after the install, to recoup some of the cost of the chev.

Motor had done approx 60,000ks when I bought the vehicle from previous owner and I have done a further 10 thou in it since. A great motor, bucket loads of power/torque and not too bad on the fuel if you go easy with your right foot.

Apparently the chev is only 25 kgs heavier than the 300 tdi although I haven't confirmed this but no mods were done to the front suspension and she drives just fine. Dont know about the Toyota motor or suspension.

The only problem I now have is that I can't go back to a six or four cylinder motor. They're just too bleep weak. :)
