I'm an Oziexplorer user but have had a quick look at "tumaus" and it looks interesting. Are there any forumites using this mapping software?

Don't know about the software. But are you going to High Country on the weekend?
Who else is going also.

There will be soon. Thank you very much for alerting me to it's existence, it is exactly the type of product I have been seeking for years and from their website it looks damned impressive.
Time to find the credit card and invest $150 - which is a bloody cheap way to get the whole 1:25000 map set of Victoria without all the other excellent features the programme provides.

Hi Ray
Yes it is. All the info from 923 1:25000 topographic maps is there and perfectly usable. There is a bit of a learning curve to the prog. (but flexibility always has a price) to use the more detailed features but nothing too hard. User documentation could be better. I haven't attached my GPS to it yet but am sure it will work fine.
The one thing I loath about it is it's copy protection mechanism. You have to register it using a number generated by your unique hardware configuration - from that number an activation code will be generated. TumAus will provide two activation codes free of charge. Trouble is as time goes by (and I expect to use this prog for the next 20+ years) and my computer operating system or hardware changes I'm going to need further activation codes. TumAus say they are not hard and fast about the two codes rule but you are at their mercy. I had some software once before using this system and had problems with it - nearly cost me a contract, it's a bad system and should not be used. Maybe time to fire up Visual Studio and figure out how to use it's debugging facilities?
I would say buy it but be aware of the copy protection issues. Now I wonder if the "Get What You Pay For" brigade will say "You should buy all 923 maps instead" after all, TumAus is a _LOT_ cheaper so it _can't_ be any good, can it? :) (I 'spose the maps don't have copy protection - but... shhhhh I’ve already figured out a little trick about that :).

Thanks Mike. It certainly seems to be good value. The copy protection is a worry but at the price it's worth a punt.
Are the maps a standard image file or in a propriety format ?

I haven't specifically checked but as the mapping data is in vector format I would be almost certain it will be a proprietary format. Are there any standard formats for vector data?

But it only seems to cover VIC, and who wants to go there? :-)
