Have heard from many people that synthetics are the go for gbox oil due to greater durability under the shear forces in transmissions. So I forked out $25/litre for Castrol Syntrans... Was very disappointed...I've no doubt that this oil is a good lubricant and would last longer than a mineral, but the shift quality was woeful to the extent that the grinding would outweigh any lubrication benefits... Changed it to Castrol VMX80 mineral at less than half the cost and what a transformation - still not at slick as ATF (Dexron - recommended for some 5-speed manual boxes despite being an auto box fluid), but ATF supposedly doesn't provide sufficient lubrication for manuals...

Gearboxes are crazy things sometimes, often you just have to find a fluid that they are happy with, Atf is fine for a lot of boxes, but hey - take my jack for example, they quote to use the same oil as the engine, or a 80/90 gear oil, or atf.. wacky stuff.... I am currently running atf, but have some nice synthetic that i am going to try. cheers

I bought a 20L drum of Syntrans Castrol about 4 years back for a bit under $11 / litre. Its still my gearbox oil of choice in the Jack and runs
well.

I have always used Penrite oils in my diffs and transmisssions and never had any problems.

I put the castrol vmx80 in my landcruiser 5 sp and it did make a big difference.
I was considering a rebuild but the new oil took about %90 of the synchro grind away.
