Warren,
Most 4WD ers and clubs (not everyone) tend to use UHF CH 10 and will probably use that Channel at Robe depending on local users. On the highway when travelling solo, Ch 40 is used by the trucks and is handy to keep an ear out on whats around. The only problem with Ch 40, the language can get very colorful sometimes.
See you at Robe.

On the serious? side, most of us use channel 10. Don't know why but that's just the way it is.

I just use a cheap hand held, works fine in convoy.

Cheers,

Jim.

Depends on whether you intend of chatting or not.

Truckies channel:40 - gives you good info on traffic/road conditions and police presence.

Nominated channel - pick a channel (we use 13) and stick to it to allow for communications and general chit chat.

This works for us!

Cheers

Chris.

Hi Warren most people choose a channel in a group (eg) friends, club or just pick a channel that is not used alot i use 18 thats the offical channel for the campertrailer group on Yahoo, others use 10, truckies 8 so if you have a group of friends that you go away with, get together and pick one or use the one they do, also certain parts of OZ use a certain channel for safety (ie) simpson desert channel 10 to warn of uncoming travellers. If you want to know more about your camper and how to set it up go to the campertrailer group on yahoo they have links and so on to help.

Hi,

Like others said, you'll learn as you go. A few more tips:
Ch's 1-8 are repeater output channels and shouldnt be used unless you intend accessing a particular repeater. Likewise Channels 31-38 are repeater input channels and shouldnt be used for simplex operation.

The best channels for general simplex use (ie when not using repeaters, talking directly to someone else) are 9-10; 12-21; 24-28; 30,39. It is courteous when deciding on a channel to transmit the message "Is the channel clear?" or similar.

As previously said, 40 is the road channel Australia wide, 29 is also a road channel on the Pacific Highway in NSW. DONT use these channels for chatting amongst your group if you're travelling in a convoy.
