Just a warning for you all. Just before our recent trip to the Cape and back I purchased a Coleman Hotwater Sytem to take with us. I also purchased the shower unit, carry bag and 8 gas cylinders. About $650. The item failed the first time I tried to use it. I tried several times but no go. I rang colemam from 1770 and asked for a new unit to be made available in Cairns on my arrival. No go but the staff at the camping store in Cairns kept it for a couple of hours and returned it working to me. (they obviously knew what the problem was). It work once after that and then never again. So I carted it as useless baggage for 5 weeks. I am now trying for a full refund, they ignored my email so I have now put pen to paper. We had to purchase a alternate shower unit in Weipa. I should of brought the tried and true Primus model. The main problem appears to be steel gas bottles being screwed into a cast thread area. It pumps water but wont fire the gas. Very unhappy with both the item and the way we have been treated by coleman.

Actually saw a demo on this by a Coleman rep recently and wasn't really impressed with the flow rate when the shower head was connected. It was similar flow rate to one of those $30 lecky jobs. One thing I did like was the new disposable/recyclable gas cartiges that cost around $6-7. You can keep a couple as backups for when you gas cylinder runs out when camping. You can get adapters for companion fittings so you could use one on your single burner hotplate for example. There were plastic feet that clipped on the bottom of the cartridge to give it more stability for this type of application. Hmmmm went off the topic a bit didn't I?!?

Algee,

Not sure of consumer law in NSW, but in Vic if a product is faulty you are entitled to a refund. Take it back to the retailer, your contract is with them, not Coleman. Their contract is with Coleman and what happens between those two is no concern of yours. The retailer should return your money, question's over.

If you bought it form K Mart or another similar reputable retailer, you shouldn't have a problem.

Good luck with your projects,

Jim.

Jimbo,

I think a faulty product has to be returned within 7 days and it's past that now.

Leroy & Jimbo.
Under NSW Consumer Law, If the product is "not fit for the purpose for which it was purchased" the consumer is entilted to a full refund.

Go for them. Fair Trading are happy to go to bat for you.
Hope this helps

And WA, and they are very helpful, it's a pain in the arse when you are the poor retailer (used to be in that situation as a GM so got all the crap). They really make it hard for the retailer, they stuck between the rock and the hard place and generally loose out. But hey, your not the retailer so go get your money back! And write off the company who thinks their so smug for getting out of it just like you are. :-)

The law in Victoria is that they have to repair or replace it ....... unfortunately there is no legal obligation for them to give a refund.

we have just got back from two weeks in corner country and a mate carted one of these around with him the hole time it worked fine as long as you cleaned the inlet filter after every use.
personally i do not think they are worth the money we use a $30.00 12v unit from super cheap that plugs into the cigerette lighter, but then again i do not mind sitting around the fire having a beer waiting for the water to warm up. The other problem that i see is that it is very easy to use alot of water with them. ( at least it is with my wife using one )
Good luck with the refund you may not actually get one but you should at the least be able to exchange it for some thing else

If the unit is faulty "by a fault in manufacture or not suitable for the purpose it was designed" you are entailed to a refund, and if that's what you want don't leave the store until they give you one.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear what happened on your trip away. Most of the replies have said what needs to be said....except the one who went off track a little...:-)

You have nothing to loose here. Keep at them, letters and also get consumer affairs involved on your behalf. Like i said, you have nothing to loose. So spend some time letting them know you want a full refund. If your capable of keeping at them, you WILL get a refund.....eventually. You have a great case to present to the proper authorities in relation to your trip.
Jsut hang in there, it will take time, but it cant get any worse.
Good luck...please keep us informed.
I for 1 am interested how they handle this problem.

All has been said in the previous responses.
Ring Coleman and advise them you are reporting the matter to consumer affairs or whatever the department is in NSW and report it. You will get action.

dont be offended but consumer affairs are as scarey as the ACCC to companies.

I had one prick once call consumer affairs for me on his phone while I was complaining about $hit work. handed me the phone then walked off laughing.

It must depend on which state you are in. Have complained to Consumer Affairs here in Qld and forced a change at a retail store. The CA staff did a good job.

Also used the small claims tribunal here in Qld with success and forced a refund from a recalcitrant trader. Just under $500 was the amount in question. The trader was a most unhappy chap pie at losing but I got my money. Nothing like a court enforceable debt to focus the mind.

Interesting.

In the meantime, am very happy with our Coleman Hot Water unit, Works a treat and is very frugal with water delivering the rated 4 liters a minute no problem through a cheap domestic shower head.

Might be a little different up this way also.
One would think that it would be in the interest of the seller of the item to replace it or you dont go back. Let them take on Coleman. Its no skin of their nose.
I have had the experience of dealing with consumer affairs up here with pretty good results.

There's an aussie site called notgoodenough.com You can go there and complain about bad service and they will also chase up that service provider and usually get a satisfactory result. Nothing like some free bad advertising to get things moving. I am still amazed how these people bend over backwards to get you as a customer and then will lose so many by bad back up service.

Algee,
Talk to the Consumer, Trader & Tennancy Tribunal on 1300 135 399. They will be happy to take up the case for you and it's free. If it needs to go to court they will take it for you and you can give evidence by phone if you dont want to travel there. I have had dealings with them on previous occasions and they are excellent. And it's not often you get something for free from the goverment! Check out their web site at www.cttt.nsw.gov.au

Hi Algee,
Sorry to heat about your problem. When (and if) you get your money back, save a little more and purchase a shower, such as Glind or similar quality unit. They are more expensive but I've never had a problem with mine.

Sorry to hear of your dud purchase Algee. I attended a Coleman demonstration last week & the shower temp came out steaming hot & he couldn't turn it down. Water preasure was fairly poor as well. He brought a big box full along & after the the least convincing product display I've ever seen he packed them all up without a sale. It would have to be one of Coleman's worst products so far in otherwise a great range of quality camping gear. The concept of having hot water on demand is great but they don't appear they have it sorted yet.
Looks like the trusty billy & canvas bucket shower is still the go. No moving parts & not much to go wrong. Good luck with the refund. Squeeky wheel gets the oil so start screaming. Cheers Craig...............

See if you can see another one. We are really pleased with ours. The water flow at 4 liters minute as per the manual (and as tested by me three times just to be sure) is fine. Delivers two hot showers out of the 19 litre collapsible bag no problems and with some water left over.

A much higher flow rate and you run into water usage problems where you are camping in water scarce locations.

We found the temp easy to adjust from inside the shower stall. Just reach out and turn the knob.

The Coleman shower rose is a bummer but you need to buy it for the fitting at the water inlet end. Just have to replace the rose, which we did with an el cheapo I had lying around. Almost as good as you get at home now.

The other spin offs are hot water for laundry on demand which my wife loves, and for washing up etc.

It is a pity you saw a bummer demo as you are right, Coleman have a generally good quality range of camping products. We have several, so are a bit biased. Not cheap, but generally good.

Dealing with Coleman is something else though. I always buy their products from a major "no questions asked" refunds policy retail outlet. Preferably K-Mart or a big camping goods chain. Just in case.

Cheers

Hmmm. And I was thinking I might buy one at some stage..... I hadn't because of the cost and a few other niggling doubts. Don't think I will now! Mind you, I think all the gas fired shower units around at the moment are overpriced too. A mate and I are working on a simple 'coil in a fruit can' heater that sits on the kitchen stove and runs from the sink water pump. Mk 1 and 2 not so good, but I think it will work eventually.... for not much $ at all. We'll see. In the mean time, get into them - you should definitely get your money back. We had a DVD player on the last trip which only worked intermittently - took it back to the Aldi store and got a refund no worries.

Algee

I was away a few weeks back and one of the others with us had one of these, and was happy with the product.

The odd thing was when the powerpack was plugged in and charging the battery it would not lightup and heat. If you pulled the recharge plug out there was no problem.

Jim
