Hi all,

Would apprec some assistance.

We have decided to buy a Cruiser to do a 12mth trip. Currently have an old rusted trayback (beach basher) but know very little of other models.

Could I get some opinions on what year & model etc to buy. Is there a stand out Cruiser, where they got it just right, almost.

Specs required are:

Diesel
Auto
Towing camper trailer
Prefer not too much gadgetry. (Don't want electrics to kill me in the desert.)
Will be only the 2 of us... midlife crisis :))
Would like to avoid too older a shape.
Price range 30-40,000 (separate budget for mods)

Doing archives but thought this may save me some time narrowing down my research to a particular model/year.

Will be fitting full mods if not already done - suspension, dual batts, bullbar, winch, lights, snorkel, uhf, tyres, roof rack, draws, milford etc

Thks in advance.

Regards
Oddy

Hi Oddy,

We have just spent 6 months travelling, and I would say that you can't go past a 78 series turbo diesel troopie. It isn't beautiful, but it is tough. We have put OME suspension under ours, kept the roadgripper tyres (with no problems), fitted a dual battery system, cargo barrier, roll out drawers, UHF radio, CD player, paratus seats, bullbar, lights, winch and dual wheel caddy. They come fitted with a snorkel as standard. I wouldn't recommend a roof rack unless you've really worked out where the centre of gravity is in the vehicle. We towed a Challenge offroad campertrailer, and you would hardly know it was there. It is really interesting to see when you get up north, that the majority of 4x4s are troopies - there must be a reason for that! You should be able to get a used troopie for a reasonable price, and if you are really lucky you might find one already tricked up, like ours. My observation is that they seem to come on the market in waves though, so don't be dismayed if you can't find one immediately.

Good luck and happy travels
Anni

What brand & type of winch have you got? I've been thinking about 'em myself.

Sparky,

The winch is a 12,000lb Warn winch. We chose that because they say that the capacity of the winch should be 1 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle. While that is probably only 9,000lbs, we tow a campertrailer as well, so we decided to include it in the weight. (I was not involved in this choice actually, and I have visions of the troopie up a tree like in "The Gods Must be Crazy")
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Anni

Any reason why you want an auto mate? Saw your other post on the nissans as well, you'd open up a whole new avenue if your willing to drive a manual!

Don't blame you on the auto, after owning an auto turbo diesel, I'll never go back to a manual 4by. Just brilliant.

That too but the old back is not good and can get a bit cranky at times. Unfortunately ain't got a choice with the auto.

Buy a Commodore and a pop top van

When you want to go offroad go on a tour in a 4x4

Most of your 12 month round the block will be on bitumen I surmise

Keep your eye out for a 100 series GXL with turbo deisel auto. I have a petrol one beautiful truck to drive - drove Cairns to gladstone towing van 2days and went to work next day comfortably. put the cruise control on and let her go. Very safe and stable truck.

12 month trip camping around Aus.? ----no other vehicle than the trusted Troopy just make sure you get the later model(I think 2000 plus) as the updated suspension is a lot more comfortable on the rough stuff.I drive 2001 troopy and have done 3 trips from w.a. across the top to the east and back with no problems
