Goto some caravan places and steal their ideas. IF they are worth my weight in diamonds, they should have been there usually and already done the sussing out of whats good and whats not.

Whilst not a camper trailer person, I couldn't help but admire the kitchen set-up in another couples T Van whom we went away with. Very easy, clean, and, well, just neat!

I liked the no clutter. It simply stows away in it's own recess.

Cheers

Johno

We have a tailgate kitchen that our customers love and you may want to use as a starting point for your design. You can see photos on our website www.tambocampers.com.au.

As a tip keep stove away from canvas and you will get more bench space if you put a basin/sink on a bracket at the end of unit. Our kitchen is powder coated steel with a stainless top but you could make it from timber with laminate if that was easier for you.

Good luck.

You might also get a few ideas from Drifta Camp Kitchens. The tailgate models are down near the bottom of the page.

Johno,

If you want to post your email address I will send you some photos of a kitchen I had built in Vic by a Camper Trailer builder at a very reasonable price. Depends if you're in Vic or not.

Mine sits in the camper, lifts out and hooks on the side of the camper in about 30 sec. Plug into the water tank and I'm in business.

Cheers,

Jim.

if you could send me some photos that would be great. unfortunately i am in north qld but my wife asked me just the other day why we couldnt have a detachable kitchen that just hangs on the tailgate. so would definitely like some ideas.

Jono,
Dont be afraid to have a go at it yourself. I got an old kids desk in the hard rubbish and modified it to do what suited our needs. Put a little thought into it before you start and make sure it's well held together(screws and glue). Start simple and you can modify and add as you go along. Mine owes me about $50. Baz's pictures are a good example, simple and effective.

Johno,

I've got some pics of kitchen set up in current and previous campertrailers on our website. Just go to Our Rigs and look under campertrailers.

Previous CT, my brother-in-law built a pull-out kitchen into the side of the camper. We had the stove/gas permanently mounted and incorporated plastic crates as much easier than having to build in drawers etc. Great set-up and worked very well. NB: Gas set-up was strictly a DIY jobby and not certified.

Current CT came with basically an empty box mounted on swing-out tailgate. The box has a drop-down front which becomes a workbench area and underneath a swivelling shelf which swings out to the side and holds the removable sink. The tap is fixed to the side of the box over the sink and we have a rotating light pole which holds the light above the cooking/preparation area. This has proven to be an excellent system after we made a few modifications ourselves. Inside the original empty box we used made up an aluminium framework which holds plastic drawers (we got some of those portable plastic drawer units from Bunnings, threw away the outer plastic casing and utilised the drawers) for crokery, cutlery and other bits'n pieces. The area beside the drawers we left as is and is perfect for storing our billy, salt & pepper, tea/coffee/sugar, repellant, detergent etc and other "used all the time" items. Originally the stove was fixed to the drop-down bench and the front of the box but it was too low for little fingers here and when in use prevented access to the box behind it so we took that off and built a storage shelf above the drawers. It travels here secured by an elastic cord. When we get to camp we simply lift it onto the top of the box and run the hose to the gas bottle which hangs off the back of the tailgate from a bracket we made up. This puts the gas bottle off the ground and out of kidlets reach. Considered going for the permanent gas line set-up again (certified for safety this time) but in the end couldn't justify the cost and current sytem is so VERY quick and easy to set-up we don't miss the old system.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions. I also have some more detailed pics I could send you as I often get asked about our set-up, old and new.
