Hi All,
Just wondering if people know of any interesting
places to go 4WD for the weekend around
Townsville?
Not too worried about doing half a days drive to get there, either.
thanks in advance

Mate,
I lived in
Townsville from 87 to 95. It's a pretty flat (geographically and socially) place. You can head down to
Ayr and do a bit of beach driving, not a lot of distance on
the beach to cover but quite nice. Catch a Whiting or 20 off
the beach.
You could head east and drive along the Burekin River. The
water is usally low and the sandy river banks are a good drive. It's good to travel with another vehicle in case you get bogged.
About 10-15 minutes north of
Townsville on the way to
Ingham you will cross Black River, again usually low and some entertaining sand driving. Take two vehicles.
If you want to travel, half a day (around 5-6 hours) will get you to the
Daintree. It's now all bitumen to the
Daintree, but
camp overnight there and do the run to the Bloomfield River (and beyond) the next day. I would suggest instaed of spending two days, stretch it to 5 and go right up to
Cooktown and back on the
Bloomfield Track. Sensational scenery, bush walks, a few modest river crossings (depending on rain), just a great trip.
Cheers,
Jim.

Townsville is not Flat there is Mt Stuart
Castle hill, Harvey's Range,Paluma Range... All within 30min Drive.
As for socially I have found any Town is as Flat as you want to make it!!!
Townsville is a Great place to be as it is central to a lot of things!
For a good Day trip/weekend go Nth to Paluma and up the range to
Paluma Dam and then the back way to Hidden valley and then across to Harvey's range developmental Rd and back to
Townsville. Good
camping at the Dam Nothing to hard 4WD .
Also The
Big Bend in the Burdekin and Red falls(Near Basalt Wall NP) Both weekend trips!
Also go Nth to Kennedy just past
Ingham up the range to blancoe Falls then either sth via Mt fox and then to hidden valley then back to
Townsville. or nth to Coombaloomba Dam very nice.
There is heaps to do in
Townsville!!!

Yeeepp,
Townsville is a great place. concur with the above. just watch out for CROCS on the coast as my son regularly goes out near Black River for the weekend and mostly always a few BIG ones around. Ive told him not to go as my 3 grandkids would probably only be an appetizer for them. Go and enjoy you lucky b#$#%er.
Regards
Bob

Hi Trolute
Bowling Green N.P. is quite nice. A good safe place for a swim and bushwalking. Plenty of wildlife while we were there.
(we were there in July 2004 and the Gates were shut at @ 6-630pm every night and you must book in
Townsville prior to going there, if staying. This was the new sysytem in place and there was NO self registering allowed at all)
Cape Cleveland N.P. (southwards after Bowling Green N.P. on the left) is another nice spot. If you go on a Friday (I think) the Nursery/Fisheries at the end of the road do a guided tour (don't know if it costs as we were there too early for it). There are a few spots you can drive into like
Bald Rock and out onto the mud flats. There were midges there so put on suncreen before the drive out there. You can
camp out there on these hugh bare areas. There is suppose to be good fishing there, just watch out for the crocs. You can also buswalk a few different
trails also along the road to the Fisheries. Best to get info from the
ranger on those though before starting out for the day.
Hope this helps.
