Just watched ABC New Inventors program 'Inventions in the shed' and this family has patented a device which tells you if your trailer lights are working or not. Very ingenious and practical.

TRAILER VISION: ELECTRICAL SAFETY SYSTEM

DESCRIPTION

Loose or faulty connection between vehicles and the trailers they tow can be detected before they cause catastrophe when Trailer Vision‘s Electrical Tell Tale Safety System is installed. LED lights mounted on the dashboard indicate the state of tail, indicator and brake lights, giving the driver confidence in his rig. Self-confident drivers make the road a safer place.

Saw that one too, was simple and clever, definitely a market for that one.

yeah top show that one , also have been watching 'inventions from the shed' not bad either.

Sounds like a good idea, not hard to whip up yourself, same as telltale lights on fuse panels, shouldn't cost more than $40 all up.

Damn you Willem, now i've got another 'potential project' clogging up my coconut..

Well, sure, you can whip up one yourself but do you *really* know how their version works? Its not like a fuse panel tell tale light at all (which ONLY indicates an open fuse and not what's happening at the far end of the circuit).

From what I observed it is actually sensing the current on each wire. You might have seen the bloke winding the little sensor coils. A hall effect device close by will tell if a current flows in the circuit.

Its the only reliable way to tell if something on the far end is working. A broken light bulb or faulty connection = no current flowing, triggering the sensor light.

I had done something similar to the trailer electric brakes, with a simple Amp meter in the circuit. Tells me exactly if and how much brake current is flowing.

Whats wrong with doing a rig check before pulling out. Thats what the missus and I did in the caravan and camper days, checking all lights was part of our check routine everyday. Just another to go wrong.

No different than the car or 4b light going poof is it. You might upset a few before you fix it. Why is it important to have this alert on a trailer and not on a trailerless vehicle.

Hi Willie

not sure he'll have it with him at Robe as we won't be towing anything...

cant remember how much Al paid for it, but I don't think it was too bad, otherwise he wouldn't have parted with the dosh... :)

Morning everyone - great show isn't it? Loved the Trailer Vision. For those who saw "Bush Mechanics" - the same guy made that doco and is doing this one. ast week they featued "Pommie John" at Coober Pedy - well he's here in Birdsville now. Willem, you might recall the old blitz-type truck out at the loading ramp on the way to the Industrial Estate (!?) well it belongs to Pommie John who left it here before the floods when he broke down on the way from opal fields at Jundah going back to Coober Pedy. He's made a new drive shaft and fitted it yesterday in the 45 degree heat and was off to Betoota where his noodling machine was left to collect all his bits and pieces and head to Coober Pedy. Got abut 20 klms out of town and a passing Policeman found him and fined him $1200 all up for various infringements (mainly for not having a Queensland permit for an unregistered vehicle etc). Personally I thought it was a bit mean.
Weather - well it's blown all night - was 45 yesterday and foul - cool 25 now with howling SE and low dust and cloudy still - spits of rain all night. Lovely. Al the campers spent the night shifting their vehicles around in front of their tents and trailers as form wind break - as the wind moved 180 degrees they were busy.
Who said life in small towns is quiet - so far we've had a meeting every day, leadlighting course is on, mosaic course next - town meeting yesterday to discuss where and how and how big for the town gibber mosaic project for 2005, first aid courses for two days, wedding and christening, each committee having AGM's, Melbourne Cup party clothes to organise. Christmas Church will be early on 7 Nov (Because the Minister will be here for the wedding and christening day before) - it's just all go here. And it's still blowing.

Hi Ruth

Yep the old ways out bush are no more.....every Dirty Harry cop is out there to fine the unwary or the chancers...such is modern life. I am so pleased I did all the silly things when life in the bush was simple(such as towing a 1500kg trailer with a 539cc 2 stroke Suzuki from the East coast to Darwin).

The dog came into my room this minute asking to be let out the front door. So I complied and the next minute there was a hell of a row outside as she got hold of the neighbours cat and threw it over the fence. Set the whole neighbourhood off in a barking frenzy. Now maybe the cat will stay in its own yard......

Good to hear that life is busy in Birdsville and that 'arthur' has eased up a bit. I put up with him and each day presents its own challenges.

I am going offline now to leave for Adelaide shortly and Uncle is coming along for our trip to Robe. Should camp somewhere on the shores of Lake Alexandrina tonight.

Take care

So ya gettin one Mr??

Wonder how many billions of klms have been travelled without one of these, yet the driver is still confident in his safety chains, towhitch etc??

Will have to look into this show, ABC does have some awesome shows for its pi$$y budget it gets. There was fresh talk about making it commercial in the paper the other week, that would destroy the ABC. I dont watch tele now cause most of it is Adverts!

Re-wired me trailer new lights, looked at LED's $194 EACH! Got the Supercheap Narvas for $8ea!

And the amazing thing in this day and age is that it is entirely NON electronic. Just reed switches and LED's.

Good invention. You know, years ago I owned a Suburu sportwagon. I think it was an '82 model from memory. Anyway, it had a warning light in the dash that came on if you blew a globe somewhere. First time it happened, the light came on and stayed on annoying the heck out me until someone pointed out that I had a tailight out. Do'h! But I've never come across a similiar system since and I've never been able to figure out why not - basic, simple, cost the manufacturers about $5.

Interesting thought. Given that LED's run on bugger all current compared with ordinary globes this TrailerVision device may not sense properly on LED lights.

Good thing you fitted the traditionalist lights Truckster, now you can fit one of these....with the money you saved on the gold plated hellas.
