Did the
Lake King - Norsman Track two weeks ago, but only from
Lake King as far as
Peak Charles. There are some old wash aways, but are generally easy to spot. Was sitting on 100km/h with a trailer comfortably. Call into
Peak Charles, its quite picturesque and not too far off the track, also stop at 90mile
water tank-its at a tight bend, cant miss it...........enjoy your trip...............col

Did this in August, no problems. Its a good idea to ring up the shire office in
Norseman to find out wether, (because of the weather) that the road is open. I found could still maintain 100 km/h no problems, some corners you need to slow a little because of the looselessness of the surface, but generally ok. West of
Hyden, some of the road, although bitumen is single laned.
Cheers,
Dion.

Hi Spotgj
I travelled the start of this road from
Hyden for ~50kms (to the
Holland track turnoff) on the October long weekend. It was a very good gravel road that i sat on ~90km/hr with van in tow.
Hope this helps
Captain

Travelled from
Lake King to
Norseman via
Peak Charles on 24/5 Sept 04. The road was great, dry but had the potential to be tricky in the wet. A phone call to the
Lake King Tavern will tell you if the road is open or if they've had recent rain.
Peak Charles is worth a visit and for the intrepid the last few metres of the climb challenging - the view is worth it.

Since the road has been re-aligned I think you will now find it is fully serviceable all year round unless very heavy rains have recently been experienced.

A good road and an interesting shortcut particularly if you have travelled the Gt Eastern Hwy route more than a dozen times? Also you see parts of
Norseman you normally wouldnt venture into- being the back of the town when you arrive from
Hyden.
There are too many mining camps using the road for it to be closed for too long.

I'm not sure if you are having us all on - this road is featured in todays West Australian - plans to seal in the future. This is to be the main
Perth to East route for heavy haulage and has been planned for nearly 20yrs. There were/are still protests going on in Jarrahdale as that is where it will enter the 'metro' area then down Mundijong Rd to the Freeway. rgds

Thanks everyone, the party got through to
Norseman via
Hyden , I didnt know about the proposed highway...Im a retired owner driver and cant see the advantage of the short cut...it would take longer IMHO with its present alignment. Might be better to build a new highway skipping towns and other sensitive communities close to
Perth.
