Ok the time has come for me to purchase. My 80 series has a bent axel again - mechanic didn't fix it properly last time and looks like the new power steering pump is leaking into the motor - I love mechanics! It has taken 2 litres of fluid over the last 6000k. So I am sick of pouing money into it so I need something with warranty.
Patrol is the answer in a 3.0 TD manual but sill unsure what model. What's everyones thoughts on the new model? Better than the last or should I buy a runout older model? And the other thought was to go 2nd hand still with warranty or get the nissan extended warranty, but I am unsure how good this extended warranty is. And can someone please tell me whether the Seriers 3 is the only one to consider or is the Series 1 & 2 ok or did both of these have motor dramas?
THANKS

Buy a run out 4.2
How anyone can get past those $5000 to replace tail lights is beyond me.
Also the lack of a rear step on the back of the lastest ugly POS GU makes it good for mum to throw the tennis raquet into the back, but useless if you want to get into it.

They would have to be those super duper tailights for 5g, wouldn't settle for anything else.

I'm with Truckster......4.2 litre would be the way to go IMHO. You've said you'd be getting a manual.....this is the reason some people have gone for a 3L , cos it's the only diesel that comes with a slush box.
As far as the various series goes (and this has been covered b4).....the series 1 GU had the 2.8L 6 cyl POS diesel; the series II was the first issue of the 3L donk (you know the one......one puff of smoke and she's gone) and the series III is the one with the new 3L and which has apparently had no reported failures.
So, I'm not sure why you've automatically set your thoughts and sights on a 3L...???

Personally, I can't see one good feature in the new model worth paying the extra for. The runout models will be at least $5K cheaper, plus the bullbar, lights, towbar and warranty extension. Only just thought that the manual 3.0 has more torque in the new motor - I'll pay this one - but others:
1. 17"
wheels - hard to get tyres in the outback
2. 2nd Airbag - takes away the useful space in the dash
3. New wheel arches - body coloured more prone to scratching and harder to keep looking good
4. Interior changes - not worth it at the ST level - OK for the Ti though
5. Rear step - not the best as already mentioned
6. Is it really better looking??
FWIW, I have put my money where my mouth is and recently upgraded to the runout 4.2 - I would say the 4.2's are all gone now, but there are plenty of 3.0's around and the dealers are super keen to move them ... let the real fun begin!
Cheers
Andrew

If you want good fuel consumption go the 3.0 L.
If you want a rock solid engine go the 4.2 L .
Uses lots more fuel but the low teck engine is more user friendly.
In Either case get a runout model and save BIG Dollars.
Then use the savings for toys to attach.

At this stage , I think the only new one worth going to is the Ti.
For the rest , get a runout model.

Hi Justin.
i am curious as to the costs of repairing the power steer pump on the 80#.
You only need a few "O" rings and a small seal cost of parts in NZ $15 plus 1 hours labour if you can not do it your self

Justin,
I had a quick look at the new model last weekend. I had heard the Interior colour was darker but it may be too dark for me. It's almost black which will hold too much heat. I don't fancy the lighter colour of the old model (for fear of getting it too dirty) but new model looks too dark. (I'm a fussy bugger!)
I think the 4.2 requires 5000km oil changes while 3.0 is 10,000km. Can someone confirm?
Dealer couldn't locate any runout 4.2s. after abit of haggling and hefty fleet discount, got runout 3.0 ST to $45k driveaway, new model was $48k driveaway.
Hope it helps.

Andrew,
So what does a farmer in Victoria have to do to get a new 3.0 ST drive away for 45K? Sounds like a lot of car for the money.
I am interested.
