I have a 2003 4.2TDi Patrol that has what I would describe as a surge problem. It occurs at 1400-1500rpm under slight load and can only be felt through my backside. The 'surge' is not felt at any other time and there is no other probs with the truck. Has anyone else had this or a similar problem and if so what was the fix?
P.S. This only began after the 20,000km service at which they had adjusted valve clearances but Nisan don't believe this could be the cause as it is only at a specific rev range.
Pete.

You're not in 5th gear when this is happening? I remeber putting my rocky into 5th with a big load on her going up a hill and realising quick that it was not smart as it was "surging" but it was the gear box straining that was causing it.

Jeff,
Happens in all gears, but more noticeable in fourth.
Thanks, Peter.

If you can only feel it through your backside, have you tried fitting a new one (backside) Might be the cheapest cure

Truckster
Have done.... twice! They are going to check fuel pump settings next but I would like to solve this problem sooner than later so I can get stuck into doing what we all like best.

Then ask for everything they have done up to this point including what they are planning on doing next in writing on Dealer Letter head, and keep it, so if your still unhappy you have some ammo for later.

I don't know if it was my imagination, but I think a new air filter fixed it.

Could it be the air con cutting in? Just a thought

Onions,

2003 4.2 TD. If you have the intercooled engine then the intercooler and associated plumbing was likely removed to get access to the rocker cover. I'd go through and check all hose connections, electrical connections, etc. Could be something simple that is influencing boost from turbo, or a sensor affecting input to ECU, etc. Wouldn't be the first time that something has been missed in the rush to get the engine back together after a service. If it wasn't behaving this way before the service then I'd suggest something has changed. Might be a good idea to ask the dealer what they removed in order to adjust the rockers.

Regards,
Hugh

I had a similar problem with my GQ Patrol. Swore it was engine related until I changed a tyre!!

Rotate your rear tyres or try some of a mates truck before you get into big dollar maintenance stuff on the engine. You might find that one tyre (or even two) on the rear has gone our of round like I did.

My symptoms were at very similar engine speeds to what you are describing.

Cheers
