The thing is, I still can't work out why in the handbook for my Delica, it says turn the key to on, until the little
orange light goes out, then crank over engine.
I too have had a new relay fitted, and I don't ever watch the light. I just wait for the "Click", which is about another 10 seconds after the light has extinguished, then start. Works every time.
Tell ya what............. their buggers in the winter if they don't wanna go............
My place used to look like Baghdad after the beast started, smoke & shlt everywhere.
Cheers
I can see clearly now Wolfie

I know what you mean by "My place used to look like Baghdad after the beast started, smoke & shlt everywhere" until I replaced the glow relay. The old Daihatsu F60's got the old style manual glow. Turn to Glow, listen for the "click", count to five on a warmish morning, count to ten on a cold morning or count to 20 on a F@*king cold morning...
I like diesels and the way they torque, but cold start can be a problem.
Cheers

Arh for technology. With the surf, you just go straight to start and away she goes, just like a petrol except it uses less fuel and has more low down grunt. :-)
....
Still look looks like baghdad after it's start though! LOL
...
After reading my toyota engine service manual though, it's more like AAAAAHHHHHHG! for technology, cor blimby you need an electronic engineer's degree just to read the preface!
Where's my poor reliable old rocky gone...?

By commencing to crank when the light goes out you are then running ( if it fires )with the glow plugs still heating thus giving a smoother run initially anyway thats my theory with the lux. If it is real cold hit the glow plugs a number of times before cranking.

Tis true, the glow plugs are not just used prior to start, but also after when running. Its the controllers job to work out the current temp of the engine, then by switching the relay on and off a few times (reducing in duration) control the glow plugs to smooth out running just after start................col
