This post coincides with yesterdays post "Crappy GQ 4.2 diesel".....
Well it's been a good day and most tests have been completed.......
I drive a particular
hill on the way home each night after work and it is good comparison....
I think i have said before that with my 33"x12.5"x15" A/T's i used to make it up to about 90kmh by the base in 4th and by the top i used to be able to keep it around 80ish kmh which i thought was great....
So i recently buy some Cooper ST's 33x12.5x15 and all of a sudden my base speed is 80kmh and my top of the
hill speed is 60ish..... So no wonder i start to worry about things like injectors, fuel blockage etc etc etc....
Tonight i put on my original
wheels and tyres which i keep at work 31x10.5x15 A/T's and my base speed is 100kmh and i held that speed till ½ way up but didnt drop below 90kmh, even at the top...
All of my speed loggings are done by GPS and not the speedo.....
So not only what a huge difference tyre size makes but the different types of treads also as both of my 33inch types of tyres are the same OD.....
40psi used at all times...... I will leave on my 31's for a couple of tanks of fuel to see what fuel econ is.......
Thanks to all that answered my last post...

Bloody interesting Vox.
Will be interested to see how this pans out, if your performance issues return when you change tyres again.
Will wait with baited breath.

Hi John...
I have not a single doubt in my mind that the performance issues will return with the refitting of my 33 inch ST's... No doubt at all...

Vox I just bought a set of BFG Muddy's and have been running them for a little while.
Just changed back to my BFG A/T's and it seemed to me that the car went a bit better, thought it was my imagination but will now watch it closer and do the same as you a bit of a comparison to see if it is my imagination or not.

Excellent info Voxson. Might help explain differnt performance opinions from identical vehicle models.

interesting
what about trying different pressures say 5psi higher (and lower?) and then 10 in the coopers and see if these alters your ramp speeds.
then after you've done all that give us the mathematical euqation which proves the facts hahaha

I am just worried about what i will try and go after next....
This time it is tyre types and sizes vs performance...
Last time it was what colour vehicles create more heat in the cabins and on the paintwork...
Next time ... Who knows...

If i get the desired result i will buy more of the "skinnier" tyres for around town....
But the clearance i have around the tyres at the moment is embarrassing...

5 and 2, you could fit 37s!
Why the 5inch?
I've lowered
mine now down to 4, and
yea looks chithouse with the 33/34's... :(
Will get the pics developed during the week....

I havent rolled the diff forward enough to fit 37's...
The 5inch springs seemed great at first but after a while they started to settle in and it seemed to loose about 2inches in height....You know,,, extra battery, winch, compressor, steel bar,
snorkel, roof rack etc etc etc...
So then i put 50mm spacers in and that helped a lot....
Then 50mm body lift and the rest is history...
I put my Cooper ST's back on again last night because i couldnt stand the sight of it with all the guard clearance...

This begs the question - are we putting tyres that are just unnecessarily fat and wide on our vehicles. My next set will be much narrower section. more like the cookie cutter which seems to have far more efficient performance.

cheese cutter's work a lot better in sand than the 10r do .Less rolling resistance than the wde tyres. when you drop your tyres the footprint lengthens ,unlike 10r's that widens amore then they lengthen.
