Hi All,

Got back last night from leaving my baby at a friends house due to possible engine
damage. Was driving up to Sunshine Coast last night when I heard this very
faint knocking coming from engine bay. It gradually grew louder over the
coarse of 5 km so I pulled over and confirmed it was definitely an engine
knock as it kept doing it whilst stationary and idling then increased in
tempo when revving the engine. I checked everywhere under the bonnet to see
if it was the fan hitting the shroud, broken belt etc and found the knock is
very prominent in the top of the engine confirmed from front and both sides.
I was in the middle of nowhere so proceeded at 80km/h to Maroochydore turn
off (a few km away). During this I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the
rear so pulled over again. Engine will not idle at the usually 750 - 800rpm
but instead around the 550-600rpm mark. Also quite sluggish at low rpm's.
Noise is extremely loud now. I rang a friend who has the same car as me who
listened to the noise and instantly said big end bearing failure but this
did not explain the exhaust smoke.

Was hoping someone from the group could offer some theories before I see a
diesel mechanic possibly tomorrow or weekend. Other possibilities I thought
were valve or tappets as these are usually at the top of the engine however
I am not mechanical at all so am guessing.

Hi David , hope I don't lead you up the garden path but with symptoms you described, top end knocking and smoke and slow idle my best bet would a fouled or stuck injector( I hope so for your financial sake) . The best way of checking is to start the engine and one at a time crack each injector union, (until it leaks) this is a bit like taking off each plug lead to identify the missing cylinder , when you come to the faulty injector it will stop knocking and just miss on that cylinder.
A lot of people have pulled their diesel engines apart looking for busted bits and buggered bearings only to find a faulty injector after a 5K rebuild.
Standard fault finding proocedure is to look at the simple things first.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Forgot to mention that I have had this problem and the loudness of an injector knock is unbelievable it honestly sounds like someone is inside with a hammer trying to get out.
Cheers.

Dave,
Just had the injectors changed on my 2.8, since then there is a ticking that gets louder as revs go up, do you think the injectors may be the cause of this also? Any help appreciated

Sounds like you have got a cracked piston or broken rings. Take the oil filler cap off when it is running. If you get smoke and pressure coming out of the rocker cover the you have got piston/piston ring problems. 2.8 Patrol engines are a very bad engine and last very little time at all.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am compiling a list and ordering the theories from easiest to check to worst. I haven't been able to have anyone take a look yet so will keep you posted. I started it up yesterday and the knocking was hardly noticeable at idle as opposed to the other night but when you revved it was bloody load - almost like taking a hammer and belting the top of the engine.

A tentative cost to rebuild was $7000 from a mates brother who will hopefully check it tomorrow.

Hoping for an injector, timing or big end bearing problem as the worst and not any piston damage.

Cheers

Thanks Dave - I would be interested in what the outcome finally is. My GU 2.8tdi now has 160000kms on it.
